Re: REBEL 10 benchmark on modern computer
Although the old Rebel doesn't work, I did get MChess 8 working. I extracted it from the Qemu emulation disk provided by Franz Huber at https://fhub.jimdofree.com/ and dropped it in under MSDOS 6.22. It ran at about 621,973 nps on the 3970x. The time is shown in total time (not last move time), so you must subtract out the prior move times. It is showing the second best move as best. Modern programs prefer Qh5.
It runs about 4.25 times faster than inside the emulator.
YMMV

How do you copy files into the DOS environment ?
4.25x seems low ...

It's a long time ago, but you can try the rebel.exe from the D-Fend reloaded version.mbabigian wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2020 8:37 pmThat version installs under D-Fend reloaded. I don't want to install it under an emulator. The whole issue of terrible performance noted in this thread seems so to be because people are loading it under emulators. I want to install under MSDOS 6.22. I didn't try it, but I seriously doubt the installer at that link will run under MSDOS.Try the version from here : http://rebel13.nl/dos/rebel%2010.html ("Download" at bottom of the page)
If Ed can provide a serial number, I can provide a benchmark score on a 3970x.

Ed:
Vinvin:
I converted the emulator's virtual drive (Chess-DOS.img) to .vmdk format and then mounted the Chess-DOS.vmdk as a drive under an old WinXP VM. I then copied the files from that drive into my MSDOS VM. Any DOS program that isn't sensitive to the speed of modern machines works fine in there.
I owned MChess back in the day and was always sad it was lost many computer upgrades ago. Fun to see it once more.
See my second post, that version doesn't work. It's a long time ago, but you can try the rebel.exe from the D-Fend reloaded version.

What's the speed of MChess 8 under QEMU on your computer ?mbabigian wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 3:01 am Although the old Rebel doesn't work, I did get MChess 8 working. Re: REBEL 10 benchmark on modern computer
I made some test under Free DOS (NOT MS-DOS) under VMware.
Wchess 1.05 speed is around 2.3 Mn/sec
and Rebel 12 around 2.7 Mn/sec

Re: REBEL 10 benchmark on modern computer
There were numbers on my old CPU (Intel Core i7-4930K@4Ghz).
I succeeded in installing and running VirtualBox 7 on my new computer, CPU : AMD 5950x@4 GHz.
Numbers are a bit higher :
Wchess 1.05 speed is around 3.3 Mn/sec
and Rebel 12 around 3.8 Mn/sec
