Leela outplays SF Dev in a position that SF evaluates as draw

Post by Nordlandia » Sun Jul 14, 2019 1:40 pm

Peter K Wells vs Jonathan Rowson | Canada op (2000), Edmonton, rd 10, Jul-08

For the price of a pawn Black has effectively shut his opponent's bishop out of the game. Moreover, it is far from clear how and when White will be able to address this problem, especially if Black endeavours to keep white busy elsewhere.

Stockfish-dev does not evaluate this as 0.00. You should amend your post at the Fishcooking Forum.

This is from Stockfish-dev (bench=3357457;commit 7090d2561ae9ce3803bbc04319c4c93f756a6df2) with default settings. You should be able to reproduce this for yourself.

That's 0.47 in favor of Black.

0.47 is essentially within draw score for most position.
In fact the game is impending forced loss with one trapped piece. A trapped piece never automatically happen. A top engine should be able to predict the impending trapped piece with his own tactics before 5-10 moves ahead like a top human can predict the problem. SF is excellent in seeing 5-10 moves tactics with checkmates and capturing pieces because those ( captures, checkmates etc) are priorities in SF heuristic search but very poor in detecting blocked/trapped pieces cos it is not in SF heuristic search.

I tested a position where I intentionally keep a bishop under the back of own pawn chain and see the difference in evaluation of SF and Leela. SF evaluation dropped between 0.5 to 1.00 in around depth 40 but Leela eval dropped like nearly a piece loss instantly.

Well, what is Lc's evaluation for the position above? Maybe it's also about 0.5-1.0 towards Black.

(They changed the Lc cp evaluation formula. Does anyone know the difference between the old and new?)

I should have been more clear. Here's what Norlandia posted at the FishCooking forum: "Stockfish evaluate following position as triple zero while Leela outplays SF as black."

Not just a drawish evaluation, but "triple zero", which I interpret as 0.00.

Out of curiosity, I installed the network 128x10.T17.6-swa-20000 linked to here. At present, I can only use my CPUs. In any case, here's lc0's output:

info depth 23 seldepth 58 time 1557045 nodes 4665017 score cp 48 hashfull 1000 nps 2996 tbhits 0 pv a8d8 d1d2 g8h7 h3h4 h5f7 e6d6 g5g4 d6d8 c6d8 f3d4 f7c4 g1h1 d8e6 h2g1 e6d4 b3d4 c4a2 f2f3 g4g3 b2b3 b6d4 g1d4 a2b3 d4a7 b7b5 d2d7 h7g6 d7d6 g6h7 a7d4 f8a8 d6f6 a8a1 d4g1 h6h5 f6f4 h7g6 f4f8 a1c1 f8e8 c1c3 e8e5 c3c4 g1e3 b5b4 e5g5 g6f7 g5g3 c4h4 h1g1 b3e6 g3g5

Perhaps someone with a "real" lc0 system can provide better.

Thanks. That's already interesting because the evaluation is almost identical to SF's and they have the same first few moves too.

Let's see what the nuke-powered Leelas say...

It doesn't do that here, unless different networks do it.

Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

This is from Stockfish-dev (bench=3357457;commit 7090d2561ae9ce3803bbc04319c4c93f756a6df2) with default settings. You should be able to reproduce this for yourself.

That's 0.47 in favor of Black.
Not only that , this SF derivative (with Lc0 scoring) , at the critical moment, readily sacs the pawn to get in the position and it sees the Ne4 Bxe4 dxe4 Rxe4 f5 maneuver almost instantly:
