Stockfish-dev with default settings (so one search thread) takes 12 seconds!

info depth 46 seldepth 64 multipv 1 score mate 4 nodes 37419423 nps 2935547 hashfull 1000 tbhits 0 time 12747 pv g6f7 b4b3 f7e7 h6h5 e7d8 b3b2 e5c7

This is ten times longer than it takes Stockfish-dev to complete perft(7) in this position.

How do other engines fare at finding the mate, say using one thread and 16 MB hash?

EDIT: Not surprisingly, Stockfish's perft is much faster than mine:

Code: Select all

FEN string = rk6/p1rB2p1/P5Kp/4B3/1p6/8/8/8 w - - 0 2
Depth = 7
Leaf nodes = 121290595

Unfortunately, almost every change which will make the search a bit more careful, will probably fail rather quickly at fishtest's STC.
Also note, this change doesn't help at all in the original mate in 5 position for other reasons.

Hi Jörg,

3 ms! That's more like it. Though the mating move does not appear in the PV.

Seriously, I wonder if Stockfish's testing methodology is now preventing Stockfish from reaching its true potential at longer time controls. I assume that the amount of reducing/pruning Stockfish does has evolved to be more or less optimal for Fishtest conditions. But at longer time controls, and given the ever-increasing power of hardware, all that reducing/pruning might actually be weakening.

But, of course, it's hard to get enough statistically meaningful data when each game takes 6 hours.
