On the other hand, $20K for RAM might be worth it if it was enough to help build the 7 man Syzygy DTM tables.

And I can get a 7702p box here :
https://www.broadberry.com/high-perform ... single-pro

with 896GB RAM (albeit 2666MHz) for $17K, so $25K gets the full blown server, properly configured. (Limited to 3 GPUs, though)

I guess the best solution will be the TRX80 and WRX80 boards. I bet they will hold more than 256GB RAM.

Every solution I find seems to lack something I want, so I am forced into waiting, and MAN, I hate waiting.

8x RAID0 NVMe SSDs == 28GBps read/write speeds, tested on practical Gen1 Threadripper hardware. $150-per-1TB NVMe SSD x8 == $1,200 + the ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 (4x NVMe SSDs per x16 slot).

Flash might be sufficient. Latency is much worse, but given enough threads you might be able to actually use all 28GBps in something like building endgame TBs.

Approximate cost performance ratios for the R9 3900X, R9 3950X, Threadripper 3960X and Threadripper 3970X for a new build with a RTX2060 super and 64GB DDR4-3200 ram. The only specs that differ is the CPU, MB (AM4 vice TRX40), and power supply is larger for the two threadripper systems. Does not include keyboard, mouse, or monitor.
3900X $1235 @ ~45Mnps = ~ 36knps/$
3950X $1485 @ ~60Mnps = ~ 40Knps/$
3960X $2680 @ ~90Mnps = ~ 34Knps/$
3970X $3280 @ ~105Mnps=~ 32Knps/$

Zen: I am looking to build a new system and find your calculations compelling. But how did you get your cost figures: chip + GPU + RAM or what? Because if you did not include mobo with the huge difference in mobo cost for TR3 vs. R9, then it would be confusing.
Do you have an updating now that we have firm prices on TR3 and Ipman's benchmark's http://www.ipmanchess.yolasite.com/amd- ... -bench.php ?

Thanks, CMA
