He knows, but they don't work on older hardware...

For me too. Good that I have created my own compile, which works here :)
(Win7 SSE4.1 no popcount hardware)
Any chance you could post it up pretty please?
Should be available now at my site:
http://rwbc-chess.de/download.htm

Please report back, if it works for you too.
It would be nice also, if you report your hardware and its nps for depthX from start position from commandline.
(just type uci / ucinewgame / go depth X in console as in my example a few posts before this)

Vivien always announces new versions of Minic in the thread titled "A complete 2000 lines of code engine".

Yeah sorry, still using my "minic main topic". It is maybe better if I announce update here ? The 1.34 is out now.

Hi Guenther, I didn't have any success running the np compile on my older non-popcount x64 system (T6600 CPU based laptop, running Windows 7). It just crashed immediately.

Sorry to hear this, I guess no compile works for you then, neither mine, nor Daniels release?
It seems strange though, as my Q8200 and your T6600 seem both Core2 and therefore SSE4.1?
I have also Win7 here (Ultimate).

I pulled out an old AMD Dual Core 4850e tower and tried running the engine from the command prompt. OS is Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) - Service Pack 1. Engine crashes immediately.

However, starting it with compatibility mode on Windows 7 (no service pack), the engine works fine.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I did get it working now, by using Windows 7 compatibility mode. Thanks to sarona for the tip. 621000 nps at depth 15. The same compatibility setting also allowed me to run Daniel's compile.
