Just for the record, the Elo chess rating system is named after Arpad Elo, I
think we should show a little respect and write his name in the right way - Elo.

Re: Elo - elo - ELO
How is spelling his name is ALL CAPS lack of respect?
We're not talking about his surname anymore, we're talking about the system that is called the same, so intentions should be considered first, and I don't think anybody has every intended to show a lack of respect for elo, regardless of the capitalization.

Sure, if you intend to shout his name then use uppercase letters.Ovyron wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2020 5:53 pm How is spelling his name is ALL CAPS lack of respect?

To write someone's name the wrong may, while knowing the right, is imo a lack of respect. Your mileage may vary.

I agree that it is not lack of respect. It is ignorance.

No, I've always known about this, and still say "ELO."Gabor Szots wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2020 7:16 pm I agree that it is not lack of respect. It is ignorance.
The ignorant people are those that think we're talking about a surname (which should be "Elo"), while we're talking about the system (which can be capitalized whichever way we want without showing lack of respect.)
The problem here is people that get offended over the littlest things, I guess ELO's spelling is having its turn now

Okay, I revoke my statement. Just looked up an realized that in English it is
usual to use lowercase letters for ampere, watt, newton, etc. when referring as
units. My bad.

I do not want to force anybody into a norm
I guess continental Europe will continue to use Elo, English speakers already
started to use elo, and some people just wish to capitalize...

Unlike "ampere, watt, newton, etc.", Elo is not a unit of measure, it's a name of a rating system.

Re: Elo - elo - ELO
It has become both , people talking about gaining or losing elo all the time. So maybe it should be lower case when used in that context and upper case when when talking about the rating system. For those of us who remember when Arpad was alive, it's not natural to use his name in lower case - even for me in the above sentence.
