Warm your engines

Post by xr_a_y » Fri Jan 10, 2020 8:41 pm

In a TCEC match oposing PeSTO and Topple, this position occured

[d] 2b1rrkb/2p4p/qp4pP/p1n5/P1PBp1N1/2P3PB/Q3P3/3R1RK1 w - - 4 30

And the 256 threads Stockfish of TCEC (aka redfish) scored it +8

After that, PeSTO won the game but understand the threats only 8 moves after SF.

What your engine says ?

Some other moves might be good enough yet to win for White too, guess PeSTO and or Topple simply will have needed some more time and depth to be as sure about it as SF here already is.

I still only have my old Athlon running so to compare I can try some very old programs, that are maybe more comparable to the programs playing in the game. Only 32 bit engines, because the operating system is 32 bit.

I tried my Rebel 12 Betazoid personality and it finds 1. Bxh8, but at first with a second move that is not accurate, maybe for other programs finding 2.Bxg4 is also a bit harder than the first move. Rebel 12 finds the first move and the second move 2.Bxg4 correctly at depth 17 although it would also play the first move for a short while at depth 14, failing low at depth 15. At depth 17 the score is only even, 0.00.

There is also Pro Deo 1.1 installed, a 2005 program that is playing here with a tactical personality, with souped up King Safety at 405 and high Attacking at 450. This is more succesful in finding the first move Bxh8 after just 14.1 seconds and keeping it but with an incorrect second move Rxf8+

I have not tried any other Pro Deo 1.1 personality or the default, so it could be some are better. There are literally hundreds of different personalities for Pro Deo 1.1 with all the different switches that Ed made, I don't know if one really was a noticeable improvement on the default Pro Deo personality or on something like Q3 as a tactical positions only setting. I liked the Singular extension Switches but sadly that did not make it in the final Pro Deo, Ed could only make it work in tactics but not to gain Elo, so it was dropped.

A simpler, but still pretty one from Marvin PeSTO game

[d] 1k1r2nr/pp1qn3/3p2p1/3Np1b1/4Pp1p/5P1P/PPPQNBP1/R2R2K1 w - - 6 20

where Bxa7 is a win

It wants 30.Bxh8 instantly but starts with about 78% score which then goes up.

Another one, from Minic iCE game seems pretty sharp

https://lichess.org/2MyRcPV7#46

[d] 2rr1k2/5Ppp/1p6/p2B4/n7/4P3/5PPP/R4RK1 w - - 1 24

Here Minic played Bb3, that was probably a bad decision ...

Reanalyzing this position at home with more time, Minic goes for Bb7 but never stick to Be6 that is SF suggestion here to old the position...

24.Be6, Rxa4 and Bb7 seem to be playable. Maybe in that order as for safeness to draw.
