I've seen it go down from a mate score before. But I think Matefinder's should be.

I think going down is okay, because announcing "it's mate in X" we always take to mean "at most X". Going up would be bad, though.

I meant I saw it show a mate score and then just a winning score. But then it usually comes back to a mate. I'm not a SF expert, so maybe somebody else can comment.

I was adding this when you posted:

We've had some (but not much) discussion in the other thread about what it might mean when SF announces mates in 30, calculates longer, and then changes its mind to mate in 50, etc. (i.e. whether mate in 30 is wrong, or whether SF "forgot" the correct mate in 30, or...).

There are also other reasons to question SF mate announcements.

Here's what Alayan's SF-dev announced.
Alayan wrote: Sun Feb 09, 2020 11:46 pm Restarting again from the inital position without clearing hash :
info depth 42 seldepth 34 multipv 1 score mate 16 nodes 409167870 nps 4772193 hashfull 852 tbhits 0 time 85740 pv e2e3 g7g6 d1f3 c7c6 f3f4 d7d6 f4h6 f7f5 h6h7 e8d8 h7g6 f5f4 g1f3 f4e3 d2e3 a7a6 f3g5 b7b5 g6e6 d6d5 g5f7 d8c7 e6e7 c7b6 f7d6 b6a5 e7a7 a5a4 a7a6 a4b4 a6a3
For the moment, say it is mate in 16.

If I haven't stuffed up inputting SF-dev's PV, it goes

1. e3 g6 2. Qf3 c6 3. Qf4 d6 4. Qh6 f5 5. Qxh7 Kd8 6. Qxg6 f4 7. Nf3 fxe3 8. dxe3 a6 9. Ng5 b5 10. Qe6 d5 11. Nf7+ Kc7 12. Qxe7+ Kb6 13. Nd6 Ka5 14. Qa7 Ka4 15. Qxa6+ Kb4 16. Qa3#.

But in that line, SF10 thinks 9...b5 allows mate in 15:

10. Qe6 d5 11. Qxc6 e5 12. Bd2 a5 13. Bxa5+ Ke7 14. Qe6+ Kf8 15. Qf7#.

SF10 thinks after 9. Ng5, Black can delay mate (back to SF-dev's claimed 16) by

9... c5 10. Qe6 Kc7 11. Qxe7+ Kc6 12. Nf7 Kb6 13. Nd8 d5 14. Qxb7+ Ka5 15. Qxa6+ Kb4 16. a3#

So even if 16 is the exact number, SF-dev (according to SF10) is giving the wrong line.

It turns out SF10 does think that it's mate in 15 at least as early as after 6... f4 [update: now after 5...Kd8]:

7.exf4 Kd7 8.a4 a6 9.Ra3 c5 10.Qe4 c4 11.Qxb7+ Ke6 12.Re3+ Kf5 13.Rxe7 Kg6 14.Qd5 c3 15.Qg5#

Whether, if you feed this into SF-dev and then go back to the start, it'll show mate in 15, I don't know. It might just avoid its first 6 moves, choosing a different PV, and stay with mate in 16. Who knows?

Don't expect SF 11 to find shortest mate in 2 posted positions. It can't even find mate in 11

SF 11 found a mate in 84 after 1.5 hours on my computer. Depth 52. Then it went down to a mate in 28 and now it's down to 24 at depth 70 (2 hours).

Just make sure you don't lose its final PV!

Did it get any lower, Jim? And do you have SF's PV?

Bringing out the knights early can probably allow a slightly faster mate.
SF can show a faster mate than your mate in 16 with my slow hardware(mate in 15).
