Komodo vs. GM Lenderman match; "Almost a knight"

Komodo vs. GM Lenderman, Almost Knight Odds
by Larry Kaufman for KomodoChess

The Komodo Chess engine and Grandmaster Alex Lenderman have agreed to play a 16 game Rapid Handicap match over four days on chess.com. Time limit will be the now standard FIDE rapid time limit of 15' + 10". In all of the games Komodo as White will play with one knight removed, but with some offsetting factors, since full knight odds has been proven to be too much even for a somewhat lower rated Grandmaster than Lenderman. Four of the games, inspired by Vladimir Kramnik's "no castle" chess, will be knight odds (alternating) with Black forfeiting the right to castle, as if White had sacrificed a knight just to make Black move his king. We call this "NBCNODDS" (no Black castling knight odds). Four of the games will be Fischerandom (chess960) with a White knight removed, but the start positions will be ones with the kings and rooks on their normal squares, so they will be legal games under normal chess rules with normal castling (I select the four positions without advance declaration from the 34 possible ones other than the normal two knight odds positions). We can call this FRCNODDS. The other eight games will be normal knight odds with one Black pawn removed, but not the critical f7 or g7 pawns. So two games will be with b7 removed, two with c7 removed, two with d7 removed, and two with e7 removed, one with each White knight removed. We can call these games NFORPODDS. In order to maximize variety and interest, each day will start and finish with NFORPODDS (same pawn), with one FRCNODDS game and one NBCNODDS game in between.
GM Lenderman, born 1989, is rated 2634 FIDE, 2642 FIDE Rapid, 2651 FIDE Blitz, and 2816 chess.com blitz. Komodo is rated 3423 CCRL Rapid on four cores, but will be playing on a 32 core Threadripper which should boost its Rapid rating to around 3600. It has not yet been decided which version or versions of Komodo will be used, we may switch or alternate daily to learn which is best.
The match is scheduled for May 18 thru May 22 with May 20 as a rest day. Starting time is 2 p.m. Eastern Time (11 a.m. Pacific Time) each day, with games starting roughly each hour, depending on length. Lenderman will be commenting the games live on chess.com, although I expect he'll do most of his talking while Komodo is thinking! Lenderman will receive extra prize money for wins and draws, with wins counting as three times draws. In case of a forfeit due to disconnection or server problem, the game will be restarted from the forfeited position.
Lenderman played and lost two previous Rapid matches with Komodo, but at smaller handicaps. In the last match, about two years ago, he lost 2 to 1 with two pawns handicap (f2 + g2, c7 + d7, d7 + e7) and also lost one game with queen for bishop + knight handicap, but since a knight is worth about four pawns in the opening his prospects are much better in this match.

Jorge Sammour Hasbun has also agreed to play two games at 15' + 10" one game with Knight odds with one Black pawn removed of my choice he told me NOT to let him know in advanced either b5, c7, d7, or e7. The Other game will be one of the Knight removed and Black forfeiting the right to castle, he also agreed not to know which Knight I will remove. For being his friend he is only charging $50 for a win and $25 for a Draw, I do NOT mind paying for it out of my pocket, but I will only send or email this game to Larry I will not make it public until you play against Lenderman.
I am also very close friend to Jorge Sammour Hasbun who gave me a few free chess lessons a few months ago, he is a great player but now is dedicated to be a great father. https://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=5300363

I misread your earlier post and thought it was Ted "adminx" rather than you that was playing these games vs. the human players, so the version I sent has his name rather than yours, but no matter, go ahead and use that copy.

If you do NOT mind I can post the first game here, if NOT I can wait until you play against Lenderman.

Go ahead and post. The hardware I'll be using vs. Lenderman will be many times faster, and the version may be significantly different, so I'm not too concerned even if we lost badly. Perhaps I'll learn something useful.

I just lost my first $50.00, and I noticed that the time of 15' + 10" is too much for a strong player like Jorge, all that he had to do was to start with an opening that forced the trade of a pawn and later on continue trading such as when position his Bishop 9.....Bg4 to trade the Knight on f3 or either the Bishop if the knight was moved to a different location, His plan was to trade knowing that he was up in material. Anyway we talked about having tomorrow game played at 10' + 5" and he agreed as well. He told me laughing that he is used to play Blitz and even Bullet games and that is sufficient time for him with such initial advantage. At least I hope for a Draw tomorrow. Also my system is a little bit too weak for Jorge , I should had rented a system like Larry. I hope that Jorge accept to play Chess 960 with one of those position where the King and Rook are in their original place tomorrow, so I do NOT have to pay Jorge Sammour another $50.00

lkaufman wrote: Sun Apr 26, 2020 6:20 am Go ahead and post.

Bad news: It is clear from the posted evals that you were using the default Contempt of 16 rather than the suggest 150, which is the reason Komodo voluntarily traded queens with 12.Qb3? I don't know what you did wrong but somehow your setting of Contempt didn't take and it played with default. With normal contempt Komodo can't spot pieces to masters. The way you can tell if you set it correctly is to duplicate the above handicap, have it start to think, and if you have Contempt set correctly to 150 the score after 1.e4 should be about -1.10 or so, nowhere near -2. Now he may think it will be easy, but if you set Contempt correctly he may be in for a surprise. Judging by this game, I doubt that he would have won if it were set properly.
Komodo rules!

lkaufman wrote: Sun Apr 26, 2020 6:20 am Go ahead and post.

Yes, because nobody here posted how to change the contempt to 150, I asked and nobody knew under the Arena GUI or Shredder GUI, so I decided to play with the default contemp

lkaufman wrote: Sun Apr 26, 2020 6:20 am Go ahead and post.

Yes, because nobody here posted how to change the contempt to 150, I asked and nobody knew under the Arena GUI or Shredder GUI, so I decided to play with the default contempt
I just figured out how to change the Engine Parameters under Shredder GUI and set the contempt to 150 the only thing that I am NOT sure is how many Threads my computer can be set to right now it is set to 1. Well with the contempt set now to 150 Jorge Sammour will have a tough time trying to trade his pieces down.

Jorge Sammour took too much time trying to figure out how to play this chess960 position in which I decided to switch the Knight and Bishop but removed the Bishop instead of the knight since I figured out that it was going to be easier for Komodo 13 to castle and keep Jorge Sammour worry about being attack early during the game. Anyway he was running out of time and offer a draw which I accepted for Komodo, becauce I know what Jorge is capable of I seeing lot of bullet games that he played on youtube, so for me it is better to pay $25.00 for a draw then paying another $50.00.I will post the game later since I have to go with my wife to the Clinic Now.
