The ONS (Office for National Statistics) has released data showing that a British citizen of Afro-Caribbean origin is 4.2 times more likely to die of Covid-19 than a white citizen after adjusting for age. By the same measurement a Pakistani or a Bangladeshi is 3.5 times as likely to die than a white person, and an Indian 2.5 times more likely.

In addition to age, Covid-19 mortality rates are related to socio-economic status, education, living in deprived areas, and underlying health problems (more prevalent in the BAME population).

Even when one adjusts for all these factors a black person is twice as likely to die as a white person, with Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Indians also well above the white population in terms of mortality rates. Possible explanations include the possibility that the BAME population is involved in more front-line jobs, and that the statistics for known underlying health issues do not paint the full picture. The research underlying the statistics depends on the 2011 census and the health issues reported by those completing it. Wasim Hanif, a professor of diabetes and endocrinology, has suggested that it fails to give the full facts. For example, he says, British people of Pakistani and Bangladeshi descent are three to four times more likely to get diabetes earlier in life than white people, and the ratio is between two and three for black and Indian-origin people. I addition no account seems to have been taken of obesity, and people who are obese are much more likely to die than those with a BMI under 25. When describing the ONS data yesterday the BBC news chose to illustrate the plight of the black population by showing a photograph of two brothers who recently died with Covid, one aged 46 and the other 38. Both were obviously grossly overweight. The one aged 46 must have weighed at least 25 stone (158 kg).

Statistics on the black population in Britain match similar findings in the US.
