Games like this are what make NN engines so fascinating!

Stockfish-dev does find Qxb4, but it takes a long time. Note that the key move goes from last on the movelist to first:

Lol Qc4-b4 was the penultimate move in the list, wow. So SF had to backtrack 7 plies after failing high. Impressive it still made it even at that kind of depth.

You're right, penultimate. 52 on a list of 53. Stockfish should use Lc0 for move-ordering alone.

Interestingly, SF was even able to find that the previous move was losing (but did not have enough time to discern a better alternative [If, indeed, there is a better alternative...]

This just shows that computer chess has reached a level of understanding that humans simply cannot follow. I consider myself quite a strong player and when I look at games between say Magnus Carlsen and Caruana ... I pretty much understand almost every move they make and can predict the majority of the moves. Doesn't mean I can play anywhere close to what they can, but I really can understand the logic and calculate the lines they do. But here, replaying the game ... I have absolutely no clue what is going on, and if they had "guess the next move" it really would be impossible to guess the majority of the moves. Of course I can replay the game and enjoy it, but OMG I just feel that the gap between human chess and engines has become gigantic!

I have to admit that it seemed inscrutible to me also. But here is SF output, after a good long think, and I think playing over the plan means that we can understand what is happening. Stockfish can see it is down a whole piece. And as we play along the pv with Winboard or some other tool, we can see what is happening. There is also some nice GM commentary on this game, but I forget where I saw it.

acd 64; ce 300; acs 2631; pv Qxb4 Bxb4 axb4 f5 Nf6+ Kf7 Rxd4 Bb5 Rxd8 Rexd8 Nxh7 Ba4 Be3 b6 Bd2 Bc6 Ra1 a5 Nfg5+ Ke7 Be3 Rd5 Bxb6 Rxe5 Bd4 Rd5 Bf6+ Ke8 bxa5 e5 a6 Ba8 Bg7 Ke7 a7 Rc6 Nf3 e4 Ne5 Rb6 Ng5 Rbd6 Kh2 Rc5 Ra3 Rc7 Nef7 Rd5 Be5 Rcc5 Rb3 Ra5 Rb6 Rxa7 Nh8 Kd7 Nxg6 Bc6 Nh7 Rxe5 Nxe5+ Ke6 Rxc6+ Kxe5 Ng5 Kf4 Nh3+ Ke5 Rc5+ Kf6 Nf4 Rh7+ Kg1 Rb7 Rc8 Rh7 Ra8 Kg5 g3 Kg4 Ra6 Kf3 Ra2 ; bm Qxb4;

Quite frankly, the really puzzling moves are usually the most beautiful when we give them a chance.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Stockfish-dev does find Qxb4, but it takes a long time.
With Pro Value 63 (maximum, game playing mode, TC >20 hours per game):

Analysis by Bluefish XI-r2:

11 seconds till solution is up for the first time in output is not so bad, is it?
Even if it takes 30 more seconds till it's kept stable as best move with rising eval.
Hi Peter,

That's very fast! I haven't studied the code, but I'm guessing that much less LMR is being applied. Now that I'm curious, let me try Komodo with LMR totally disabled...

Schwabli (my chess- PC) is busy right now, so I'm curious for your results.
As for Michael Byrne's r- versions, there is presearch with different kind of pruning- techniques reduced, following ideas of Michael Nowak's HekaStockfish. One of the two Michaels should be best to tell more about it.

Komodo-14 with Use LMR set to false. Takes more than 12 minutes to find Qxb4. (And much longer to show a positive score.)
