In the evaluation of every engine there are "dark stains".
So only engine-engine matches can show the real power of engines.
Capablanca was a genius for playing game endings and was also a Chess World Champion.
The problem I left on this topic was solved by Tahl and he was also the Chess World Champion.
So a good engine is one that can solve a problem and also be a Champion in engine vs engine match.
This is only your idea.
The old time Chess World Champions were not machines and they were also not perfect.

What I mean is that one thing does not remove the other. That the deficit of the engines. The better they are for competition the worse they are at solving problems and vice versa. Older, lower-range engines perform better than current ones.

But then there's no good engines. Either they fail at this puzzle or they're destroyed by Stockfish.

All engines are bad.

Re: How good is your engine?

Post by Dann Corbit »

"Problem Solvers" is an extremely useful category of engine, and they don't have to be world beaters for strength in game play to be incredibly useful.

The best is Bluefish-XI with a couple small tweaks, which has no rivals so far in my testing.
But there are positions that will baffle Bluefish-XI and yet Sting can solve them.
Maybe it is necessary to run Chest to solve a position.
It is nice to have a full tool-bag so that we can find the answers we are looking for.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

I gave Winter the first position from this thread, not expecting it to find anything. Indeed it struggled and I gave up on depth 40, only to see that the bestmove UCI output was the right move! After starting the search again it was printing the correct line form the beginning :)

Code: Select all

info depth 28 seldepth 52 time 85227 nodes 84006843 nps 985671 hashfull 58 score cp 317 wdl 845 153 0 pv g4f6 h7g7 f6h5 g7g6 d1c2 g6h5 d7d8q h5g4 c2d1 g4g3 d8e8 c5c4 d6c6 g3f4 e8g8 g5e4 g8c4 a6c5 c6d5 b4a3 d1c2 e3e2 c4e2 e4f6 d5d4 c5d7 e2e3 f4g4 c2d1 g4f5 e3d3 f5e6 d3e2 e6f5 e2c2 f5g5 c2g2 g5h4 g2f2 h4h3
With a fresh search it likes Nf6 up to depth 11 before rejecting it in favor of other moves that it believes offer no winning chances. I think contempt could be used in order to more easily find the right answer for such problems.

Fresh search output:
