Hi Wael,

more interesting, much more speculative and aggressive is Patzer 3.61L.
This experimental version we used in Leiden and can play very aggressive with pawns.
Maybe most aggressive with pawn moves from all engines at this time I know.
But around 25 Elo weaker as version 3.80.

I believe we made place 4 in Leiden with that Patzer version, I believe in the year 2001.
I tuned the book for a game vs. Fritz.
Thinking on the face by Frans Morsch after the book moves.
100% right was I do because Fritz plays without book moves to fast with the queen.
We had advantage in the game and a great attack but lost later in middlegame.
And the face by Frans (really a very, very nice guy) is much more friendly after the game.

I like the engine a lot and helps Roland at this time.
It's one of my favorits for self playing.

:-)

If you like to download the engine:

Patzer have many interesting possibilities in text mode.
Much more as modern engines today.

If you wish a great tournament ...
You have to added to Patzer: Aristarch, ETChess and AnMon
and you will be have fun until end of life.

Best
Frank

I am using Patzer as sparing partner vs. Gandalf.
Helps the Gandalf programmer to at this times and found many mistakes in Gandalf with the playing style of Patzer.

A nice time for computer chess.
The programmers and his very interesting own ways they go without all the open sources.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for this version of Patzer that I will definitely take it for a ride ....

Did you just say that the programmer of Gandalf is working on a new version ?

Cheers,
Dr.D

Hi Wael,

no, no ...
In the past ... First WB Edition CD project from Gambit-Soft.
The Gandalf programmer helps a lot here.
Important at these times, that stronger Winboard engines are avaialable.

Shredder 3 (secret code for Winboard).
WB Nimzo ...

Are not enough!
Ferret and Chess Wizard (private engines) never available. Chess Wizard performed with the hightest Elo in a grandmaster tourney (2682). Also games I got from Chess Wizard gave the information ... around 75 Elo stronger as the commercial number one Fritz (at these times).

Chess Wizard are never WB compatible (more times French master).
Arthur are never WB compatible (MAC)
Ferret have an own GUI but no WB support after all I know.

And one of the most interesting amteur programs Arthur (Walter Raveneck, the "Knight" expert ... positional knight moves in middlegames) are never available.

We needed more of such material to make Winboard more interesting at these times.
And here Steen Suurballe gave me his support in the work I do most of times with Gambit-Soft and Djordje Vidanovic, other helpers.

Later we powerd UCI with the first UCI Edition CD from Gambit-Soft.

Gandalf 4.32f (Winboard) are at this times the number 4 in the World.
But complicated in using with the right settings.
Winboard adapter from Chessbase runs not stable enough.

It's a pity that we lost so many interesting programs in the last years!!!

Gandalf have two evaluation functions ... for find attacking moves in middlegames faster.
So, possible that Gandalf played moves the eval goes up (means if the first eval is higher).
What programmers do if the days are short and the nights are long ...

Gandalf 4,32f is to strong for Patzer 3.61L but in middlegames a hard fight between this two great engines.

Patzer's aggressive pawns vs. Gandalf's open lines ...
That's indeed computer chess I like so much!

Best
Frank

Always refreshing to see the old school computer chess master, Frank giving some feedback.

Downloaded Patzer 3.61 and looking forward to some fun.

How would you say this Pazter compares to say...Phalanx or WChess 1.06?

Hi Ted,

not looking in detail but I added a logo-collection, I collected for many years (my older winboard site), for you on my server.
Here you can find a logo for Patzer, maybe you can find some other nice works by 100% "Winboarders ... nice guys the "Winboarders" ... believe me.

http://www.amateurschach.de/download/logos.zip (around 4-5Mb).

The good and old time ...

Best
