Looking for best Boris Spassky material (english chess books) ...

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi there,

in German language not many chess book material about Boris Spassky (10. World Champion) is available!

Different information I can found in overviews about World Champions (here a lot of material is in German language is available).

- from Garry Kasparow, "Meine großen Vorkämpfer Band 5"
- from Dagobert Kohlmeyer, Weltmeister lehren Schach
- from Andre Schulz, das große Buch der Schachweltmeisterschafften
- and different material / games from hin and tourney where he played in some other books (in all books about Booby Fischer for an example).

Interesting is the German Book:
- Spassky - Weltmeister from Salo Flohr, writtin in 1969

Where I am looking:
A biography with own material from Boris Spassky.
In English language are some more books available!
Maybe TalkChess members can give me a hint (what's good with own material from Boris Spassky).

Best
Frank

PS: I wonder about it because the German chess book market is not bad.
But from different strong players I missed a good biography in German language.
So I must looking what is available in English language, here my knowledge isn't good.

"The Best Chess Games of Boris Spassky" by Soltis
It is very hard to find and very expensive
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Hi Graham,

Tal, Petrosian, Spassky & Korchnoi Multibiography Mc Farland 2019, 2. edition from 2020
Interesting is that the author is the same Dann Corbit mentioned.

Normally the older chess books are more interesting (free from computer chess analyzes).
Not sure what Mc Farland do here, Mc Farland is a top address (high quality chess books).

From the 100 best games I found in England the book from 2002
from Hardinge Simpole Ltd, same author as you mentioned!
9781843820000

I ordered the book for minutes via eBay.
I think the same you have.

Not sure with Mc Farland 2. edition from 2020 or the book from 1973 Dann mentioned (same author).
The book from 1973 in a good quality today seems to be expensive.

I have a copy of Boris Spassky: Master of Initiative written by Alexander Der Raetsky and Maxim Chetverik. Very reasonably priced on the web.

I often visit your web site (Frank's Chess Page) to follow the various FCP tournaments and also to check out the other content. Keep up the great work.

Hi,

oh yes, that book I saw also!
Now I ordered two and have to read the material.
Spassky build the big hole in my own library and will be my text personal topic.
Spassky and Gelfand (the four newer books from Quality Chess from Gefland).
I hope my English will be better after reading, maybe my chess.

My old webpage in old *.html ...

In times "our dear" programmers celebrate the very modern "GitHub" revolution ...
I celebrate the old *.html possibilities.

I have time the next months for much older ideas.
Two new selections I have in my brain, things I do in the good and old winboard times.

The different to more as 20 years before, I am older and need for all what I do more time.

:-)

Have fun with my site around ...
"Wasp and the Rivals" ...
Could be a name for one of the next ...
and all the time ...
interesting Graham Banks tourneys.

Frank

Yesterday my provider moved to new systems.
Very fast server with fast SSD hard-disk.
A new IP address and I try hours to update a selection and see nothing.
So I have written a mail, what's going on ...

The answere: A bad time Frank, but here is the new IP please update "name of server" and your site again.
Hours ... again, I am to old for all this.

Hi,I also have the book from Raetsky/Chetverik.
It is a collection of positions from Spassky's game turned into puzzles.
There is a better book from Jan van Reek "Grand Strategy,60 games by Boris Spassky"

There's also a book by Sergei Soloviov on Spassky's best 300/400 best games/wins, I forget exactly which.

And furthermore there is Spassky 'Move by Move' by Zenon Franco.
