Re: M1 Apple Silicon for Chess?
I'm a 360°technology and chess fan (more interested in chess engines programming that in playing chess )
I have created a new topic for not disturbing people discussing here about chess engine tournaments and algorithms:
Apple Silicon M1 for Chess - Hardware and software issues and workarounds
http://talkchess.com/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=77008
More than happy to continue this discussion there.

Since it is a rip-off of GPL 3.0 Stockfish 12 and they have finally published the source as requested, I have compiled it:
Fat Fritz 2 for Apple Mac M1 https://1drv.ms/u/s!AkW3Hj0Gl_ewzzeSyhV ... E?e=aPonX8
Source: https://github.com/DanielUranga/Stockfish
Enjoy!

Re: M1 Apple Silicon for Chess?
Can you point me to where there were any posts made here not letting people "buy what makes them happy", I think you are chasing ghosts... I am trying to discuss the merit of Apple's M1 for chess, and the logical way is to compare the performance and price to other alternative CPUs / and modern laptops/computers for SF, Komodo, LC0 etc..If that hurts some fanboys here I cannot really help out. But sometimes the truth does hurt... This does not mean we should stop discussion from different angles, and opinions.jshriver wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 2:28 amBeen following this thread and it's kinda hard. Good grief, let people buy what they want to buy and makes them happy. I'm looking forward to the m1, OS X is a solid OS, and I can use all my *nix goodies from it. It's just another machine in the lab and another option to explore and enjoy for what it is. Dont understand all thie anger.
Mods, is there anyway we could split this thread into an actual M1 for Chess and another for Apple vs The World for the flame threads, so we can have a clean post for just chess ports and info?
On a side note I do have enough for one now, though I'm torn because I've been getting into AI and NN a lot lately, and debating getting the m1 or a 3060 for my linux box. Torn because I could realy use the GPU, but looking forward to toying with OS X/iOS dev and porting engines over and testing.
Will give it another month, 3060's have been sold out for a long time now.
If I get the stimulus check then I can get both and still save the rest. Crossing fingers

Great points made!!Alayan wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 12:56 amI don't like Apple. I find their control-freak attitude regarding the software ecosystem and hardware maintenance on their machine repelling; and so do I find the "brand cult" they have. I wouldn't buy a Mac even if it had awesome performance/price (which it doesn't have).Milos wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 8:15 pm You are already deeply converted to iSheep, so you are not a target audience of ppl that write realistic (well bad in a view point of a rotten apple fan) posts about Mac hardware. Ppl write here as warning for others that didn't yet cross to the dark side .
Apple is an (evil) multi-billion dollar company, not a forum member. Asking moderation to protect it from bad comments is kind of ridiculous.
Many claims about the superiority of the M1's as a CPU are exaggerated. I argued earlier how the power efficiency comparisons with desktop x86 CPUs are highly misleading.
But it's not productive to be aggressive towards people who bought a Mac, or to claim the M1 is trash (it's not, as a CPU, though tied to a software stack I don't want to touch). This disrupts civil discourse, and makes the forum a less pleasant place. People who already agree with you will consider your points, but others will ignore them because your tone put them on the defensive (others have done it too, my point apply to them too).
I have to say also that many Apple users I come across in my work have tended to get very aggressive for the slightest criticism of their HW/SW on a personal kind-of level, so sometimes it feels like you have to walk on eggshells. It's not surprising to me scientific studies have shown similar psychological mechanisms as religion towards certain super-brands.

@H.G.Mueller: please, do those the favor who want to discuss chess apps on M1...I'm really fed up with this pre-pubertal behavior of some posters here. 30+ pages and more than a half nothing but childish os warfare.
Ciao

I agree.
Already made a specific topic for discussing Apple M1 hardware issues (chess engines related), but someone continues to post here.
Mods you can remove my comments about them in this topic, if needed.

AlexChess

Re: M1 Apple Silicon for Chess?
Title of the thread is M1 Apple Silicon for Chess. It was meant to discuss hardware not apps. So first, you are the one that hijackes the original topic and then goes for 30 pages off-topic and second, like some kid go to mods and cry mommy, mommy. Grow up. If you wanna discuss apps, make a new topic and copy apps relevant posts there.acepoint_de wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 8:47 am@H.G.Mueller: please, do those the favor who want to discuss chess apps on M1...I'm really fed up with this pre-pubertal behavior of some posters here. 30+ pages and more than a half nothing but childish os warfare.
