Interesting Puzzle for Engines

Post by abgursu » Mon Jan 11, 2021 6:23 pm

In my Kings & Pawns tests, I found a interesting endgame problem which I believe lots of engines won't see quickly. (My computer needed lots of time to even realize this)

For copying: 8/1p6/4k1pp/p1p1p3/4P3/1PP4K/P2P3P/8 b - - 0 13
As you see the below, both Eman and Ethereal didn't see a4! and a win coming.

a4! is difficult to find for a lot of engines.
I added the position here : http://talkchess.com/forum3/viewtopic.p ... 45#p879045

Here are some results for current engines who find a4. Some are tested with 2 different NN-files.

Good job! How did you find this, when the engines didn't?

This is the longest draw in my K&P database. Usually, long draws means first, a change in evaluations and after some moves one side realizes a draw and the other side's realizing takes more time(Eth here). I just analysed deeper at the time when both engines' eval is highest.
Both engines' and humans' normal move will be b5 here. If this was a tournament game I would play b5.

This is a Blitz Game Andrew. And on my computer, which is not a too strong one. I never said Ethereal can't, just takes time.

This is a Blitz Game Andrew. And on my computer, which is not a too strong one. I never said Ethereal can't, just takes time.
I know lol. I'm only joking. 3 minutes on a bit stronger machine and its found very highly evaled. Still running it now out of curiosity. Wondering if a breakthrough can be found to convert to mate.

Deep Shredder 13 seems very strong for this kind of position.
Found in less than 1 mn.

a4! is a world class move - would be very impressive for a GM to find that over the board. There are some correspondence games that are decided on moves like that ...

Cfish is fastest on machine, just a few seconds, 220M nps is insane...
