Hi to all.
I am beginning a new challenge.
I will play pawn endings against engines, eight pawns vs seven paws.
I get the white pieces and one pawn advantage.
The opponents are: Berserk, Crafty, Komodo, Lc0 and Stockfish.
I will play with each one of the eight missing pawns against every engine (40 subchallenges).
I have to win at least once in each of the 40 subchallenges.
Time control: 10 minutes initial 10, plus 10 seconds increment.
Ponder on for the engines.
Other than that, all engines with default settings (unless there is reasonable suggestion to modify something).
One general comment about the challenge.
Since there are a lot of pawns, there is a real risk of blocking the position. Keeping the extra pawn, but without being able to invade with my king.
There is also the risk of some tactical oversight on my part.
I have just played the first game against Berserk, taking the a7 pawn.
Berserk did not really offer much resistance. After some moves, it just began to sacrifice one pawn after another, for no good reason.
I understand that the position is lost for it; but still I do not see the point of just giving up even more pawns.

Re: Pawn endinge challenge: human vs engines.
Hi,
that is interesting!
GM Joel Benjamin wrote an interesting book about it.
Liquidation on the Chess Board - Mastering the Transition Into the Pawn Endgame
978-90-5691-825-5
In my humble opinion one of the most interesting chess books I ever read!
So I try to play some of the position also vs. different engines!
I will follow, thank you and good luck!
Best
Frank

Without the boths Queens and removing the two Bishops plus two pawns Odds a Patzer like me can challenge Berserk -9, But NOT Dragon 3.1 or StockfishChessqueen wrote: ↑Wed Sep 14, 2022 7:22 pmpepechuy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 14, 2022 6:08 am Hi to all.

Re: Pawn endinge challenge: human vs engines.
Hi.
Now, the first game against Crafty, taking the b7 pawn.
Before getting into the game, I want to mention that I switched back to BanksiaGUI 0.54 (after playing the first game against Berserk within BanksiaGUI 0.55). I could not get Crafty to work with the newer version, it kept resigning in the first move, and after several tries the GUI just crashed, I will continue the challenge with version 0.54.
Oh, I still can not prevent Crafty from resigning. I set resign = 327.65, and it resigned two moves before mate.
The game itself was not very difficult, I just had to be careful and play a few precise moves.
I like specially my move 10. g4; it looks ugly, but it was the way I found to avoid closing the kingside.

that is interesting!
GM Joel Benjamin wrote an interesting book about it.
Liquidation on the Chess Board - Mastering the Transition Into the Pawn Endgame

In my humble opinion one of the most interesting chess books I ever read!
So I try to play some of the position also vs. different engines!
I will follow, thank you and good luck!

Hi.
Benjamin's book is about transition into a pawn ending (from other endings), not really about pawn endings in particular.
For example: from rook ending into pawn ending, or from bishop vs knight ending into pawn ending, usw.
I have read only an excerpt, not the whole book.
What I liked: he uses several examples from games he lost (I guess they left a painful impression on him).
Greetings.

Re: Pawn endinge challenge: human vs engines.
Hi.
Now, the game against Komodo, taking the c7 pawn.
A win for me... quite a difficult one, at some points I was not sure the position was still won for me.
Also, I ran low on time, less than two minutes... at the end I had over three minutes, but that was because the last moves were too easy.
10. g4? would have been a very bad move: black replies g5 and now it is impossible to break thru the kingside with my king. Whether the position is still won, I do not know; but it certainly becomes very difficult. In the next few moves g4? is still bad for me, for the same reasons. For example, 11. g4? g5, and black just leaves a pawn on g5, regardless of what I play.
I considered 13. e5, but I did not like 13... g5, and Black gets a passed pawn on d5.
At first, I did not understand 14... Kb6 and was about to play 15. ed5; fortunately I saw that Black simply replies 15... f5, and the kingside is almost closed.
After 19. Ke3, I really did not know if the position was still won for me. But I saw that even after 19... Kc4 (a seemingly dangerous move from Black), there were very little chances of losing: I did not see any variation where Komodo promoted before me. Here I was low on time.
After 19... g4 I felt relieved, I saw that I would get an outside passed pawn.
I was not sure about 23. Ke4, I also considered 23. g3. In hindsight, I think both win; but during the game these decisions are not easy!

Re: Pawn endinge challenge: human vs engines.
Hi to all.
Now, the game against Lc0, taking the d7 pawn.
A win for me.
Actually, I think Lc0's defensive set up was very good: leaving each side with three pawn islands, and my pawn majority in the central one. This way, it keeps the option of attacking either of my other two pawn groups: my extra pawn is not "outside".
However, I think 16... h4 was just a bad move (at least from a practical perspective); it deprives itself of the possibility of going after my h-pawn. I think 16... b6 was better. After 16... h4, the win was straightforward.

The next game is against Stockfish, taking the e7 pawn.
When I get the chance.
Greetings.
