This looks like a five ply sequence to me, so my guess is that Connie only managed 4 plies in this position. It looks like I'll have queen vs. rook and five pawns, a very unusual material balance. Whether having the queen is good for more than perpetual check remains to be seen.
Connie mounts her high horse and plays the quiet Intermezzo...
38..Nf4
[d] 6k1/p1pr1p1p/1p4q1/5r2/3p1nRB/3B2Q1/P7/6K1 w - - 0 39

High-Ho Silver..Regards

It's Connie's best move, infact the Connie has been playing some really sensible moves after putting her Queen where the h-pawn should've secured.

Not many choices for White, 39. Qf3 which is drawn technically or 39. Rxg6+!?..hg followed by 40. Qe1 creating some imbalance that the Connie might not handle correctly.

There's also 39. Bxf5?!..Ne2+ but that road seems to be in favour of the Connie.

I think Larry's next move will be 39. Rxg6+ and play for complications, now and for the Endgame to turn it around in his favour.

Kemo Sabe, him say man ride over ridge on horse. Regards,

40. Qe1 (forced)..Rdd5 41. Bxf5 (if Nxd3 41. Qe8+ and 42. Qxd7 or 40..Rfd5 41. Bf6! and White is better) It will be interesting to see which direction the Connie will go.

I play 40Qe1, which appears to lead to the expected material balance of queen vs. rook and five pawns. I'm back from the US Open now; I tied for sixth place with a 7 out of 9 score. I missed the serious money and the US Championship qualification spot by half a point.

The Connie has picked the greedy road which leads to her having a marked disadvantage for the first time.

41. Bf6! and the game is better for White and Black still must conceed material or get mated.

It is possible that the Connie could reach a fortress in the far distance.
Something like that:

[D]8/Q4pk1/6p1/5r2/6K1/8/8/8 w - - 0 20

Probably it will chose inferior lines though, which at first glance
look better by material. Surely it has no concept of such fortresses.

I've looked at some lines and even a modern computer and program at this point would be very hard pressed to draw, 40..Rfd5?? was a serious mistake. The Connie is being far too materialistic by trying to save the Rook or putting off it's capture. I don't know if it sees the capture of the Rook as inevitable? Also, it's very unlikely it can play this Endgame accurately anyway. Computers back in the mid eighties were terrible Engame players mostly due to the lack of powerful hardware we enjoy today and of course there's been a lot of software improvement as well but at 5-8 shallow plies even modern software wouldn't fair well.

I think Larry is strong enough to win from this point without too much difficultly as long as he's careful.

Sublime & Subtle Moves Regards,
Terry McCracken
