It's Connie's best move, infact the Connie has been playing some really sensible moves after putting her Queen where the h-pawn should've secured.
Not many choices for White, 39. Qf3 which is drawn technically or 39. Rxg6+!?..hg followed by 40. Qe1 creating some imbalance that the Connie might not handle correctly.
There's also 39. Bxf5?!..Ne2+ but that road seems to be in favour of the Connie.
I think Larry's next move will be 39. Rxg6+ and play for complications, now and for the Endgame to turn it around in his favour.

The Connie has picked the greedy road which leads to her having a marked disadvantage for the first time.

Probably it will chose inferior lines though, which at first glance
look better by material. Surely it has no concept of such fortresses.

I've looked at some lines and even a modern computer and program at this point would be very hard pressed to draw, 40..Rfd5?? was a serious mistake. The Connie is being far too materialistic by trying to save the Rook or putting off it's capture. I don't know if it sees the capture of the Rook as inevitable? Also, it's very unlikely it can play this Endgame accurately anyway. Computers back in the mid eighties were terrible Engame players mostly due to the lack of powerful hardware we enjoy today and of course there's been a lot of software improvement as well but at 5-8 shallow plies even modern software wouldn't fair well.
I think Larry is strong enough to win from this point without too much difficultly as long as he's careful.
