Is Stockfish a better chessengine than Houdini 4 ?

Post by consen »

Hello. I have a pc with 4 CPU with hypertrading. A Intel 3770 CPU with 16 GByte RAM. I have tested newest Stockfish against Houdini 4.

This is the result after 502 game.

The match is played with opening book
Perfect2014.ctg. It is 16 Megabyte big and all game are altso played reversed.
That mean that all game have repeatet opening.
The same opening as stockfish have, that opening nex game altso have.

GUNNARPC, Blitz 1m+1s 0

1 Stockfish 300314 64 SSE4.2 +40 +156/=248/-98 55.78% 280.0/502
2 Houdini 4 Pro x64 -40 +98/=248/-156 44.22% 222.0/502

Is stockfish better than Houdini 4 ?
This was a choking result.

They are about the same strength. Stockfish improves fast, but we have no news about latest Houdini ...

NB!
I use Fritz 14 as GUI and use 4 CPU on both Houdini 4 Pro and Stockfish 30.mars 2014 SSE4.2. And use standard RAM for engine match

On very fast time control, that seems not to be true yet :

Houdini has a very optimized function of position initialisation and UCI command parsing. As a result, the less time control, the more advantage of Houdini.
I went through the Rybka code forwards and backwards and took many things.

Interesting comment. That would seem super easy to duplicate (optimizing the code) for the SF team as these mentioned items are probably only a few lines of code. I do know that Rybka was just horrible in position initialization, but I always assumed it had more to do with Rybka architecture using processes rather than threads.
