SF novelty 10 g4!

Post by beram »

How long does it takes the fastest hardware to find the SF novelty 11 g4! with Houdini 4.
On my AMD 1090T system using 6 cores it took about 40 minutes to find it at depth 29

...and indeed, with the usual MultiPV=1 my old dualcore did not take that long
(but still, g4! was found at depth 31 instead of depth 25 with MultiPV=3)

No idea---I don't use Houdini. (This is why I replied to Ernest's post and not to your original one.) I'm sure someone will supply Houdini results soon.

On my AMD 1090T system using 6 cores it took about 40 minutes to find it at depth 29
It's not possible to answer your question accurately without running the test many, many times.

When chess engines are run on more than one core you get something called indeterminancy. That means you get randomness in the search. If you ran this position 10 times on your AMD machine you'd get 10 different results. On one attempt it might solve it in 5 minutes, on another attempt it might take over an hour.

My machine is a dual xeon E5-2687W (16 physical cores total @ 3.4GHz.).
It runs at 30 Million NPS and yet failed to find g4 in 20 minutes.

But I only did the test once.

The position before g4 seems to be novel in itself: I don't find it in my databases. Can you post the game?

Right, Carl !
But I found that very often, at least with Stockfish, using MultiPV=more than 1, for instance 3, you get the solution at a lower depth, and the spread (like your 5min, 1hour) is much reduced.

By the way, my Houdini 4 with MultiPV=3 has now been running for 2 hours and starting depth 30
