Game 2: Komodo has its knight trapped at a7

Post by Jeroen »

Komodo doesn't take the 2nd pawn in the return game, favouring a quick development instead. Surprisingly, Komodo allows the move 19... c6, which traps the knight on a7. That looks pretty dangerous for white, but apparently there is no way to take profit for black. Hence a draw is the correct result.

Game 4: SF offers exchange for 2 pawns, draw

Post by Jeroen »

In the return game SF prefers to offer an exchange for a knight and two pawns. It looks a bit risky, but in the end black is able to exchange enough pawns to reach a drawn ending.

Game 5: SF goes 1-0 ahead after difficult game

Post by Jeroen »

The 9.Nh3 line in the Two Knights shouldn't be too difficult for black. For some reason, SF is able to consolidate its position and make use of its extra pawn.

Game 6: SF draws after interesting game

Post by Jeroen »

In the return game Stockfish plays more actively and white never gets the chance for an advantage. After some interesting complications the game peters out in a draw.

Game 7: SF goes 2-0 up in the Fried Liver attack

Post by Jeroen »

In the Fried Liver attack white tries to punish black's weaker 5... Nxd5?! move by sacrificing a piece for two pawns: 6.Nxf7!?. As black's king is in the center, white has ample compensation. Some time ago this line was heavily analysed on the Rybka forum and it seems white is simply better in all lines. Komodo tried to relieve the pressure by giving back material, but the two bishops and the pawn mass on the K-side were unstoppable.

Game 8: Komodo strikes back (2-1)

Post by Jeroen »

In the return game Stockfish tries to defend by giving back the piece for two pawns, but this also fails to save the game. White's strong bishop and pawn plus easily lead to a white win.

Game 9: small advantage to Komodo, but still drawn

Post by Jeroen »

I am a bit surprised that black allows the Nc3-a4xc5 manoeuvre winning back the pawn. Komodo is a bit better, but not enough to trouble white: draw.

Game 10: SF chooses same line, also drawn

Post by Jeroen »

Stockfish chooses the same defence in the return game, but instead tries to keep the pawn advantage. White gets the d-file for its rooks as compensation and this is enough to draw the game.

Game 11: SF holds in the King's gambit

Post by Jeroen »

A wild line in the King's gambit. Stockfish hurries to exchange queens, but after 19.cxd3 white's pawn structure looks bad. Eventually Komodo wins the 3 trippled d-pawns going a pawn up, but by active defence Stockfish saves the draw.
