Game 32: slight Komodo edge not enough for a win

Post by Jeroen » Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:07 pm

Komodo holds a slight edge during most of the game, by activating its king (Kc3-d3-e4-e5!). Nevertheless, the equilibrium never seems to be broken, so we witness yet another draw. Stockfish maintains a 5-1 lead.

Game 33: SF scores a drawn rook ending as +3.00

Post by Jeroen » Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:15 pm

The Botwinnik variation of the Semi Slav always leads to interesting play. Stockfish gets 3 pawns for a piece, but after 31... f6 a draw would be the logical outcome. As the game progresses, black loses control over the 3 white passers and Stockfish shows a +3.00 score in the remaining rook ending! I don't know if white missed a win somewhere, but it is quite funny to see Stockfish evaluate the position after 76.a6 as +3.00, while humans know this is a trivial draw.

Game 34: another entertaining Botwinnik game

Post by Jeroen » Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:18 pm

Stockfish chooses a different line in the return game, equalizing without too much trouble. Black gets some alarming passers, but by sacrificing its knight, Komodo easily holds the balance.

Game 35: even this murky gambit cannot prevent another draw

Post by Jeroen » Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:24 pm

In this murky Trompovsky gambit white is two pawns down, but black's queen has to be safeguarded somehow. After some really interesting play, Komodo seems on its way to its 2nd win. But again we see an amazing evaluation mistake: obviously after 56.Kxc2 it is a draw, as black has the wrong bishop. But 'thanks' to the two extra white pawns both engines think black has a huge advantage! This is not the end of the story, black wins the remaining two white pawns and still shows +4!? What is happening here!?

Game 36: crazy game, many adventures, but.... drawn anyway

Post by Jeroen » Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:26 pm

The return game is also rather crazy, it is a pity the GUI aborted it as a draw so early (although it looks like a draw anyway).

Game 38: Komodo presses, Stockfish defends

Post by Jeroen » Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:32 pm

Komodo presses hard for another win, sacrifices a piece with an enduring initiative. At move 29 black's position looks worrisome, but Stockfish defends and holds the draw.

Game 39: Blufenfeld, white looks better, but Komodo holds

Post by Jeroen » Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:35 pm

This Blumenfeld line scores very well for white and at move 22 Stockfish has a score over +1. But this turns out to be illusory: within a few moves Komodo easily holds the draw.

Game 40: last game ends in a draw, Stockfish wins 5-1

Post by Jeroen » Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:38 pm

A very interesting game, Komodo shows a clear white advantage. But with active and tactical play Stockfish manages to keep the game within the limits of a draw. Thus the match ends in a 5-1 victory for Stockfish (with 34 draws).
