Guenther wrote: Fri Nov 20, 2020 5:07 pm BTW Martin do you have changed the numbering scheme after Cheng4 0.38?
Previously Cheng4 was the engine name and the digits beginning with zero named the version.

Same applied for Cheng3 versions according to Leos recording during my absence.
yes, historically ChengN with different N was a full rewrite/different engine and 0.38 was a minor version
however, this was confusing to many so with 4.39 I decided to simplify this and to change
to Cheng 4.39, which I find easier to understand, so this should be read 4.40 dev
sorry for the confusion
Does this mean Cheng4 was a rewrite and not really being based on Cheng3?
Leo did not mark it as a new engine at that time.

Yes, Cheng4 was a full rewrite from scratch, except that I reused some boilerplate from 3. It took some time before I catched up with best cheng3, this is why Cheng4 starts at 0.35, which was one of the first versions that measurably surpassed 3 1.07; I've even found some ancient 4 0.15 that I sent to Silvian years ago.
also, Cheng3 did support Gaviota tablebases but Cheng4 doesn't support any TBs

the first two (chesseng and Cheng II) were never released, they had their own GUIs and didn't support any protocols

Well then I will split the entries now in two :) and change the version name to current scheme. Thanks for sorting it out.

Angle wrote: Fri Nov 20, 2020 3:38 pm On this issue, I have a question to you: what does ''dev2'' in the name of Cheng 4.40 mean? Does it mean that there exists a ''dev1'' version that is not the same as ''dev2''? At the moment, I have only one Cheng 4.40-dev version that I downloaded from the Guenther's page. Am I missing something?
that's just an internal name, it's the same version that Guenther compiled, except it's a VS2017 build.
note: this is not an official release
also the improvements are modest (if any)
Thank you for the explanation and the historical reference, Martin! I was also in doubt about proper version names: 4 0.XY or 4.XY. Now everything became clear. May I use the development version in my toirnaments and report the results on this forum?
Incredibly fast systems miscount incredibly fast.

sure, feel free to use it in your tournaments. I'd like to see how it does against other engines, so yes and yes :)
