Yes, I know about the elo of tasc - that's why it's in the match-list.

But what about 1 kN/s? When? Where? Stockfish 13 makes ≈ 300 N/s during middlegame here now. What does it mean? In "elo"? In relation to the Tasqué R30 V 2.2? Emulated!

I do want to find it out.

Computerchess is a (on/off) hobby for me. The lockdown is to blame...

NB
1% speed
So. Question for you: What is given when you do "bench" in stockfish 13 (just default options here) from your skynetmachine/Ryzen/EPYC if any? Hint: cpulimiting for the 45 MHz-version here will come around ≈ 500 N/s (It will take an hour).

For running Stockfish on emulated older hardware, it might be worth looking into PCem. It emulates old PC's (like 8086 to Pentium, depending on how fast your hardware is), and importantly tries to be as timing accurate as possible, which I am quite certain is not the case for QEMU. I think doing it in a way that is accurate with regards to hardware speed would make the comparison fairer.

I've an old i7-4930K overclocked to 4 Ghz:
With 1 core :
Nodes/second : 1'250'057

With the 6 cores (command : bench 1024 6) :
Nodes/second : 7'588'273

An AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (16 cores) is about 2 times this speed.

l0lZ0RZ!

I get this in the now limited machine:

Code: Select all

===========================
Total time (ms) : 12917813
Nodes searched : 3766422
Nodes/second : 291
(some bits from the terminal buffer):

Thanks for the data!

Mon colonel!

Yes. Maybe I sould've done it like this - tried fs-UAE before...; was too impatient, as a setup in which netBSD was running inside it, was thinkable. Perhaps later.

But thanks for the hint (did not know of PCemu) anyway+greetings!

Running now:
Match against Saitek Risc 2500 (V 1.04); Stockfish has got a new book thanks to Eduard Nemeth, who shared with me some of his treasure with which I could make a 14ply polyglot-book (lightweight, 40kb). Thank you!

Greetings!

Re: Old code (dedicated comp) vs New code (Stockfish) Tournament

Post by cpeters »

The match against the Saitek Risc 2500 (V 1.04) has been aborted as there were to many losses (overall and:) due to the erratic (or clever?) time consumption of the Saitek. Emulation was very slow too.

As a sparringspartner for the HIGHLY SELECTIVE and INTELLIGENT (it must be, 200-350 NODESPERSECONDINMIDDLEGAMEARETHEPR000F) Stockfish a program from R. Lang was chosen: (Mephisto) Genius 68030 (v. 4.01 in emulation): it had around 30 seconds per move and did his bit of pondering. Intellifish had a small book (12ply, 30kb in size), no endgame-bases but the ponderthing enabled.

Code: Select all

Rank Name Elo games score oppo. draws
   1 Stockfish 13 m68k@45MHz 2608 59 92% 2233 7% (+52 -3 =4)
   2 Mephisto Genius 68030 NORML 4 2233 59 8% 2608 7%	(+3 -52 =4)
(with bayeselo; the "2233" is a somewhat accepted/measured value for the Genius )

Veryvery entertaining games (and understandable by humans (dumb me)); pgn is here:

Also not your typical computerchess with participation of Fritz 5/6/7/8 or other early programs released during the late nineties and advertised with playing strength of 2600 "Elo". I'm in envy of the Brettcomputer owners at that time (I was young and hadn't the money/interest for such things)!
I bought Genius for the iPhone because of these games; the Twerpfish played also always very nice active and strong chess!

In five games the Genius blundered horribly, like here in move 35:

After playing around with fs-UAE and Debian*/NetBSD (looking for precise emulation) within, I decided to stop this experiment alltogether, as it proves basically nothing except that an extremely limited Stockfish plays still very strong chess, because of its very effective search-algos and was written in clean and highly portable code. It doesn't need the million nodes per second to play "shtrong" - it's just the difference between 2600 and 3500 "Elo".

The dedicated chess machines of our time are all to wooden for me to buy one btw. They look baroque and antiquated with their phony golden plaquettes/foil to me (Ach, so schöne handgeschnitzte Figuren aus Echtholz...). Some of them (they've got little computers inside) have to be wired to a thing to become essentially 'wireless' which is madness (or just good business), but have piece recognition and nice blinking LEDs. But electric rays are dangerous for the brain and testicles anyway, so thank you!!!!!

E-boards from DGT are missing LEDs (they're just e-boards) but one can have from them a nice modern/stylish looking
good selling 'Centaur' which is essentially useless (at least for me) as it lacks a long list of features (a pro-/uncrippled version of this thing would be nice). Perhaps in five years...

There are some other manufacturers of solely wooden/plastic but wooden aesthetics devices.

Greetings!

*things were slow there; thougt about dropping a certain dev (who is running m68k ports on real (!) hardware) a mail to give me a benchmark, but this is would've been an idiotic request.

Nice match !
1) Can you confirm that this Stockfish 13 ran around 300 nodes/second ?
2) What was the approx. speed (in nodes/second) for Mephisto Genius 68030 ?
3) Did you set 30 seconds by move for SF13 ?

Thanks !

Hello Vincent!

2) What was the approx. speed (in nodes/second) for Mephisto Genius 68030 ?
This I don't know, as it doesn't get reported anywhere: I "thought" I've seen '4000 Nodes/second' in an old issue of "Selective search" (this would've bee not for the dedicated machine, but DOS-version on some PC from that aera (fuck my memories!)):
http://www.chesscomputeruk.com/html/sel ... _1995.html
but I can't find it anymore. This is maybe due to my weak brain an the "4000" might be completely rubbish: Mr. Lang/the olde garde will know however.
3) Did you set 30 seconds by move for SF13 ?
I did not. I did set in cutechess-cli

Code: Select all

st=45 timemargin=15000
Reason: compensation for time the mame-chessplugin needs to enter the moves; Genius isn't a headless uci-engine; it has a emulated board-representation. The plugin 'presses buttons' for time control, making moves etc.

Genius sees 30secs/move liberal anyway. If it has a ponderhit it will react instantly - in a somewhat complex postion he might think for two minutes. It is all fair game, as this is stated in the manual for the Genius. More strict would be 40/40 (and so I did this in the next match with the Tasc R30 2.5; I couldn't resist and will post pgn and so later).

As the emulation is precise (!), the power of your rig doesn't matter for Genius as he lives in his own world. If emulation is very fast, the '30 seconds' will be 10 seconds realtime or so. If you've got a slouch (70% emulation speed) it will take longer in our world, but the moves made by the dedicated machine are the same!
1) Can you confirm that this Stockfish 13 ran around 300 nodes/second ?
I limit the speed in the emulated (there is a m68k port of Debian/Sid running inside it; so no old software mind you) Macintosh quadra with

Code: Select all

cpulimit -e stockfish -l 5
. The machine is headless (no GUI) and I ssh into it. The bench values I posted earlier didn't change a bit.

For cpulimit to detect the process and regulate it, takes ≈100ms.
This is from today (timecontrol is like 40moves/40 minutes; Tasc gets more (but doesn't matter for him, but, to be fair for Slowfish, as he gets more time to ponder), so that cutechess is happy):

And here is the complete log for it this very game (it expands to 4mb) which is might be interesting for you:
https://www.file-upload.net/download-14 ... hi.7z.html

The match with the Tasc is finished and I will post it later. Interesting will be classical evaluation (no nnue) for the Ponderfish! This is running as of now and will take a while of course...

Greetings!
