In this position, Kg2 is good (because of Rh1 will be possible later) and Kg3 is bad. Gaviota cannot see at this point the danger of playing Kg3. How do other engines do here? the problem seems to be beyond G horizon. I wonder whether this blindness is G specific. SF changes its mind relatively quick to Kg2.

I tried a few. Some start with Kg3 and switch to Kg2 fairly quickly. Shredder 12 is an exception, it chooses Kg2 immediately. But I tried Naum 4.2 on 4CPU, and it starts with Kg3 and after 5 mins is still sticking to it. So Gaviota is not alone !

Gaviota here on infinite analysis switches to Kg2 after 11 seconds. Perhaps in the game it couldn't afford to spend that long. I can't recall how much time was left on the clocks.

Thanks Miguel.
Cheng was clearly losing (both agreed) and I thought the game was over already.
I ran cheng on this position and it would play Kg3 as well (switches to Kg2 after 40 seconds - 4 cores, 2G hash) so as I said, this was about a ton of luck.

There is always an element of luck in these tournaments, but it is nice when it goes your way :)

WaDuuttie never considers Kg3, but likes the Rh1 plan:

On 8 cores here it takes over 2 mins to switch to Kg2, at depth 27. So yes Cheng would almost certainly have played Kg3 itself.

I thought the game was lost too, or best case a draw, but you need to take some good luck when it comes your way, because sometimes it goes the other way ! A similar thing happened against The Baron too. There things were very even, and suddenly Cheng had a big advantage.

An example of where things go wrong - in the game against Arasan, out of book at over -1 as I recall, which quickly got worse, and the game was over almost as soon as it started. An excellent Arasan book more than anything else, at that stage Cheng was using performance.bin, a winboard book which has always seemed reasonably OK. A pity I don't have the pgn of that game to look at further to see what happened exactly.
