Suggestion to Intel for new instruction

Post by Michael Sherwin »

The last time I suggested a new instruction to Intel in this forum three years later they came out with it. So, I thought I'd try it again.

Intel if you see this a move and zero memory would be very convenient. :D

Very interesting, Michael. Thank you. Could you please detail your request a little bit more?
Just out of curiosity, which one was your past request to INTEL?

Because I wanted to select bits in an occupancy by using a mask and then use them as an index I said at the time that if Intel were smart they would add that instruction. They implemented it slightly different than my suggestion. They called it PEXT.

There are two uses for the new instruction. For example empty squares on the chess board are zero. So moving a piece identifier into a register and zeroing the from square would save time. Also I create a que of special actions and when I remove an action I have to zero that action. There are probably more use cases.
