wow - I just got my delivery date from Velocity - 12/23. Earlier, that was my "to be shipped date".

A modernized Baby Blue is coming home for Christmas - less than 96 hours.

Even an old fart like me can get still excited with something new ... I'm guessing this will be my last PC here on earth, I'm sure in Heaven, chess will be solved and no PC required ...

For those perhaps on a more modest budget, the Intel I9-10980XE might be the way to go. 50M nps for a $1000 processor looks pretty good to me. A home built system could be had for under $2k easily.

I dunno. AMD Ryzen 3950x also hits 50M nps for only $750. Even more ridiculous: the 3950x hits higher nodes-per-second despite having only 16-cores against the I9 10980XE (18 cores) !!. So the AMD Ryzen 3950x somehow gets better instructions-per-second with regards to Stockfish.

I think the Intel is useful for PDEP / PEXT and AVX512 experiments, which could be worth the $250 extra. But otherwise, the AMD 3950x undercuts it and is more pragmatic. Although... the 3950x seems to be completely sold out wherever I look, so maybe Intel's 10980XE benefits from simply being in stock right now.

Its a good time to be a computer hobbyist right now.

Good point , the 3950x can be found for $900 at retail and the 10980Xe is currently retailing at $1100. They are pretty close in value. If you have custom built system by Puegot, the 3950x system will be $500 less than 10980xe, currently $2600 with Gt1030 and 16Gb ram, 1TB 7200 SATA - but most folks will upgrade all of the aforementioned.

Aside from the aformentioned single-cycle PEXT / PDEP and AVX512 support, 10980xe uses a HEDT-class X299 Motherboard. So instead of spending $200 on a consumer motherboard for the Ryzen 3950x, you end up spending $300 to $500 for the HEDT X299 motherboard instead. The HEDT Motherboard gives you more PCIe slots (44x PCIe 3.0 total) and Quad-channel RAM.

I still thnk the Ryzen 9 3950x is a better value for most consumers. But the 10980xe has many "interesting" bits if anyone is willing to spend the extra money for it. To maximize the value of a 10980xe build, you really should be considering 2x or even 3x GPUs and 8x sticks of RAM.

If you're using only 1x GPU and 4x sticks of RAM, the Ryzen 9 3950x will be much cheaper.

A processor family that has over 200 known hardware security flaws, many of which are unpatchable and require turning off hyperthreading (as Google did) has zero value. I wouldn't buy a processor from Intel until they fundamentally redesign their chips. Probably 2 years away at the earliest - if they start taking security seriously. No signs of that yet.

Intel has zero cores, zero speed, zero instructions (BMI, AVX or otherwise), and zero credibility until they fix the mess. At $1 for a 10980XE, the chip costs $1 more than its worth.

Sad, but Intel is out of serious consideration for the foreseeable future.
