Search is getting bogged down question

While searching the start position it finishes depth 10 in 0.49 seconds and settles on e4. Depth 11 then takes 13.28 seconds and switches to d4. Depth 12 then takes only 4.24 seconds and stays with d4. Is there someway to ameliorate the search from getting bogged down like that?
