This time there were some issues. Harm Geerts computer broke down, Liesebeth forfeited his 4 engines but somehow the games were still hanging when the next round started. Igel had issues starting his games, so Liesebeth decided to forfeit him because the tourney was already delayed too much. To make the number of players even again she also removed Sargon1 from the tournament.

rofChade with his 64 core 3090X ended first place, rpiforchess lost a game on time and still ended second place which is quite some accomplishment. RubiChess, ArasanX and rpiRofchade ended third.

Schooner lost a game due to a crash. mhouppin boosted his Elo (TPR) by 400 points, I wonder what he did. Zahak, a brand new engine, managed to score 2 points which is not bad at all. And last but not least: Skipper was in shock because he won a game from Sargon1 before it was forfeited.

[edit] zappaRB (Zappa Mexico II on a 10 core i9-10900X, the world champion of 2005) ended on the 22 place, software really has improved a lot. Actually I think Zappa Mexico 2 was later, this is just what I've been told.

Well, the reason for the large rating gain is pretty funny: I missed the past 4 tourneys ^^ During that time, Stash got 6 new major versions and gained over 300 total Elo. I should be able to play slightly above The Baron for future swiss events.
Thanks for the tournament !

Thanks for running this.

Aside from logging on, I missed pretty much everything due to going to get a chinese takeaway meal for the family, consuming the food, then watching a classic film with one of my lads (Pulp Fiction).

Here is what I have found so far on the Schooner crash. From the debug event viewer just before the crash:
The hypervisor did not enable mitigations for CVE-2018-3646 for virtual machines because HyperThreading is enabled and the hypervisor core scheduler is not enabled. To enable mitigations for CVE-2018-3646 for virtual machines, enable the core scheduler by running "bcdedit /set hypervisorschedulertype core" from an elevated command prompt and reboot.
Glad to see that the graphics freeze is not an automatic driver update problem this time. You can read about the problem here:

More important is Microsoft's answer:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/top ... 47a0ab3385

What is the problem at this point?

1. According to the Microsoft information, someone is trying to hack the ICS through a net virus - but that is not probable.

2. More likely is that my system Core Isolation/Memory Integrity is interpreting the low level communication between the ICS and the engine as unknown information. Rather than guess, the system just shuts down for protection. It only does this when Winboard is connected on the net. To me, that is too much system security protection.

3. The problem might also be an outdated version of Cygwin or Winboard. I am guessing this is most probable.

Here are my solutions to try:

1. Update Winboard to the latest version, or use a different interface. I do not want to use HGM's installer executable. I have to fight too hard to find the folders, and gain access privilege. Is there a Winboard.zip available to simply paste into a folder? Is there a better free GUI for the ICS?

2. Try the "bcdedit /set hypervisorschedulertype core" suggestion. This might add extra overhead on the system, but I have not clocked it. Or...

3. Turn off Core Isolation/Memory Integrity. This seems drastic but there are instructions on how to do that. I like this best if there is no real use for it, since it should reduce system overhead. Anyone else looked at Memory Integrity?

[edit] zappaRB (Zappa Mexico II on a 10 core i9-10900, the world champion of 2005) ended on the 22 place, software really has improved a lot. Actually I think Zappa Mexico 2 was later, this is just what I've been told.
Yes Zappa Mexico II was last in the line, about 2-3 years later. Software has indeed improved a lot over the last 15 years.

Windows has the Core Isolation/Memory Integrity feature turned of by default. I've never tried to turn it on. However it seems strange that Windows would automatically reboot to protect your system from malicious processes.

I agree that Winboard is not fully compliant with the latest Windows versions (like so many other chess software), but I've never seen it behave in a malicious way.

Are you sure that it is not just a hardware issue like a too high overclock?

My Windows systems are always perfectly stable, the last blue-screen or unexpected reboot I've seen is at least 8 years ago, and I often run my systems 24/7 for several weeks in a row.

Yes. The hypervisor message is the only error reported before the crash.

I am retesting a lot of stuff now. I doubt overclock is a problem. First, I regularly run a lot of tests with more core and memory demands than the ICS tourney. Second, a crash has only occured (twice) during the ICS monthly tourney - coincidence is highly unlikely. Third, the intel debugger says thermal temperatures are 47 degrees below maximum with a full load stress going on. Only 8 cores are used for the tourney. The issue is software.

Never heard of Corchess. After looking for it on the internet I found it's just a Stockfish clone, like so many nowadays.

Yeah. The author claims he modified some code to have better results in Long Time Controls for Correspondance Chess ;-)
