Influenza and adenoviruses are spread by droplets, by handshaking, by contact with contaminated surfaces, fecal-orally and by eating food that has the virus on it ie salads, cold foods.

In general, I think the tradition of shaking hands is not optimal from a health/medical viewpoint. It is clear that - for instance in periods where influenza is dangerous - viruses are spread by shaking hands. Recently, I was shocked to learn that even in a small country like Austria where I am, 3,000 people per year die from influenza. I think the traditions of shaking hands could be replaced by a similar gesture, but without actually touching each other. That would save lifes! The United Nations should propagate that.

Actually it is very possible to catch the flu by shaking hands or even off a shopping cart, as the flu virus can live for some time outside the body.Dr.Wael Deeb wrote:The Influenza virus affect you when you breath it,not by shaking hands, even the little children are aware of this fact,I wonder what type of paramedic are you....tjfroh wrote:Dr. Deeb,

Regardless this isn't really the issue, the issue is respect for the opponent and not shaking hands is considered contempt for your opponent so under protest the FIDE changed the official rules back in June last year.
I don't agree with this new rule and it will lead to other problems. You can't make people respect or like each other.

If one is worried about shaking hands, then one should also avoid to touch anything that has been touch (with hands) by someone else...Mike S. wrote:While this seems funny, it is a realistic danger. 1. keep a risky tradition, or
2. go for zero risk with no downside
what should we choose? I guess mankind is intelligent enough to respect and greet each other without touching hands. Maybe I still overestimate mankind's intelligence (despite experiences from CCC )...
Moreover, if one is afraid about small, yet non zero, risks, noboby should be allowed to use cars for example, it kills people directly every days (accident) and indirectly (pollution). I think that using cars is much more "dangerous" than shaking hands...
