And with 512MB has it took 19 ply and about a minute more. I am impressed nonetheless. :D

Well ... that does show that checking how long it takes an MP engine to solve a position is really a crap shoot. However my 3.2Ghz Quad also solves it quite quickly ... I will have to see what my hash table setup was. I always press the "clear hash" before running a position ... also I would be interested to know if the memory setup makes a difference ... eg. is faster FSB better ... or lower latency better. From what I understand it seems that Rybka 2.3.2a was very dependent on memory speed and latencies ... while R3 is not so much.

Different memory speeds could make up for some time, but not for a different plydepth I suppose.

Btw, would you like to run this position 10 times (clear hash after each run), to see if timing vary a lot ?

Alburt, It is very important to know approximately (atleast) how the evaluations were going, and which moves of Fritz were mistakes.
After the exchange of queens was it already a mating attack?

Albert Silver wrote:I just finished the match between Rybka 3 64-bit and Fritz 11, using the Silver Suite. The idea was to test the top two single-CPU contenders against each other and see what came of it. Although on some lists Naum 3.1 is even slightly ahead of Fritz 11, its results against Rybka 3 were pretty bad, so Fritz 11 seemed like the strongest contender under the circumstances. Frankly, the results are hard to quantify. Just so you know, all this prelude is to sort of try and help reduce the shock.

Code: Select all

Rybka 3 +75/-4/=21	85.5/100
Fritz 11 +4/-75/=21	14.5/100
I won't try to tell you how much better this is over Rybka 232a. Suffice it to say this is a performance of a full +308 Elo over Fritz 11. Seventy-five wins to four... It kind of boggles the mind. If this commentary sounds like hyperbole, let me ask you how you would describe it.

Here is a cute game it played, where a seemingly innocuous queenless middlegame (at least to poor innocent me...) quickly turned into a mate attack:

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e6 5. e3 Nbd7 6. Bd3 dxc4 7. Bxc4 b5 8. Bd3 Bb7 9. O-O {end of book}

[D]r2qkb1r/pb1n1ppp/2p1pn2/1p6/3P4/2NBPN2/PP3PPP/R1BQ1RK1 b kq - 0 9

This is one of the positions from the Silver Suite. There are several acceptable continuations. Each engine plays it as both white and black.

9...a6 10. e4 c5 11. d5 c4 12. Bc2 Qc7 13. Nd4 Nc5 14. Qe2 b4 15. Na4 O-O-O 16. Nc6 Bxc6 17. dxc6 Qxc6 18. Qxc4 Qb5

[D]2kr1b1r/5ppp/p3pn2/1qn5/NpQ1P3/8/PPB2PPP/R1B2RK1 w - - 0 19

Although I can find the attacking moves that followed the queen exchange with other engines, none of them chose to exchange queens here as Rybka 3 did.

This kind of brought to mind a comment by the late Rudolph Spielman, a great tactician, who said that he was perfectly capable of finding every single combination Alekhine found, but as to setting up those positions that led to the combinations....

19. Qxb5 axb5 20. Nxc5 Bxc5

[D]2kr3r/5ppp/4pn2/1pb5/1p2P3/8/PPB2PPP/R1B2RK1 w - - 0 21

So queens are now off, and sure, white has an edge, but I didn't expect it to continue as it did

and here is a challenging (winning) move for engines that Rybka 3 finds in about 1 second

Hi Albert,

Thanks for the test, this result is indeed incredible :-).

Can you do me one favour? I know that the Fritz 11 GUI has problems with showing the right scores when playing engine-engine matches. I.e. the score it keeps during the match is likely to be faulty. Can you check if the score in this match is indeed right?

Best is to go to the game file, select all the games from the match and produces a score table. In that case the score is correct.

Thanks, Jeroen

The score is correct. In fact, I personally watched maybe 80+ of the games as they were played. I was so surprised at it start with 10-1 that I thought either there was a bug, or I needed to see what was going on.

Here is a sample of the first 9 games, just so you can get a taste of how the games often went. They are only blitz, and longer games will be more interesting no doubt. All games were played at 3m + 2s with 256 MB hash.

Re: Reality scarier than fiction

Post by M ANSARI »

I know what you mean ... I was also watching a tourney where Rybka was scoring in the high 90%'s against Zappa II even after 15 games were played ... for a while I thought there was something wrong with my setup ... that maybe I had accidentally installed the version of Zappa II where you have to manually add 4 cores to play with 4 cores. To my surprise it was the correct Zappa and in task manager it had 4 cores at 100% during its turn. I think you will find similar situations once CCRL testers and CEGT testers start testing it ... but maybe not since they have been warned.

I wonder why your Rybka 3 insists on finding this in ply 19, while Rybka 3 of ANSARI and Albert find it in 17 ply.

I mostly wonder about why Rybka 3 single CPU on Albert's 2.2GHz Athlon, finds this in about 7.5 minutes while your Rybka 3 MP on 4 cores on Q6600 makes more than 10 minutes to find.

Perhaps you are using different versions or else i can't find another reason.Have you used for this analysis the latest version of Rybka 3? Or one older beta?
The same question to Albert, if he used the latest Rybka 3 for this analysis?

Since your results if you use same Rybka 3 make no sense. :D
After his son's birth they've asked him:
"Is it a boy or girl?"
YES! He replied.....
