Strongest Toga-engine?

Post by Norbert Raimund Leisner »

Hello chessfriends,

in several rating lists (CCRL, CEGT).... are different kind of Toga versions:
Toga II 3.1.2 SE
Toga II 1.4 Beta 5c
Toga II 1.4.3-3JD-Beta

What do you think is the strongest of them or exist on another place
a version which was later released and is freeware?
Exact URL-links to download them would be useful.

Regards
Norbert

Toga 3.1.2SE and 1.4.1SE have the highest chance of being the strongest Toga, I think.

Another Fruit/Toga based engine is Cyclone:

I think the answer is simply that there isn't, there is no strongest Toga because the differences are small and it depends on how you test them which one will likely get the best results.

But here is a list provided by Shaun Brewer which is up to date to about the 29th of July for the CCRL. (Press list)

Thanks to Shaun for testing Toga Checkov Beta 3, I did not have any testdata for that version, Dennis made a fast compile I think, it is only fifteen points behind the 2 CPU version of Toga II 1.4 beta5c and the rating uncertainties overlap, so the 4 CPU version might reach a bit higher even in the list... 8-)

I would suggest registering at the Toga Developers Forum for the latest news, the latest versions are from Jerry Donald I think and called Toga143JDb8a and Toga143JDb8b. The compiles by Denis Mendoza are not yet three hours old! Not yet downloaded when I looked!

I don't what they are doing there, people testing Toga on 32 CPUs
All's well!

I have somehow lost the link to the Toga Develops Forum. Could you post the link here?

Many Thanks

Hello Jean-Paul,

You have to be a registered user to be able to visit the other forums and this version is still just a Beta so not for general download. But the important thing about the latest versions is that they can now use the Number of threads UCI option so no longer different version are needed for different number of threads. And the protype of Jerry's version is now also available with settable number of threads and in the General Forum that everybody can access. I just found the message there and Denis made a compile only yesterday:

Toga with multi-cpu option
by Denis P. Mendoza on Sun Aug 03, 2008 2:41 pm

At last, we finally made it to work. Jerry Donald's latest beta 'TogaII 1.4.3JD beta8' now has this option.

Since Jerry's beta is not yet for release, I decided to port it in the previous releases for public testing.

At the moment, I only built 2 sets:
1. TogaII 1.4 beta 5c
2. TogaII 1.4.1SE

Feel free to comment. But my initial tests shows that they are working properly in using the 'NumberThreads'

Note that it is 'Number of Threads = 2' by default as it was profiled in 2-core mode.

Many thanks to the contributors.
