No, I didn't copy this from the Hiarcs forum, one of the Rybka forum moderators did.

thanks Swami
seems the Cluster is the new powerhouse hardware on the block now
amazing to see Octals as the weaker hardware now with Clusters packing 16-40 cores

Hi,
Just a little note that Zappa was using 512 cores few years ago at the WCCC. It did not win the championship.

Also Falcon with just 2 cores (laptop?) drew Junior, which used state of the art 12 cores Intel Dunnington. It's nice to see that the hardware is not everything.

Regards.

Moderators shouldn't be doing that. That's where I got the pairings. The round times are from the Hiarcs forums. Thanks harvey for the reply and all the infomation you've provided :).

Hi Peter,

I don't see a big difference say to 2004 Ramat-Gan, except we all are four years older now. Why should it be the last one? As long they find sponsors who will pay 50K€ or something (which might not likely the case in the US or Canada). Levy has huge reputation and connections, so has Jaap with his new job in Tilburg. They are primary business and conference people and are used to stay in a nice and expensive ambience.

In the future, the focus will be even more on other games from the computer olympiad, and chess is a small minor add on, one game among others. This game scene is still more academic, probably similar to the cc scence in the 70ties and 80ties. May be ICGA should join or collect the soccer robot scene to get some fresh blood ;-)

Cheers,
Gerd[/quote]

possibly, but then: at least on CCC Ramat-Gan was mighty relevant - people really cared.

If people couldn't care less, the event ceizes to matter.

actually I tend to agree: chess might be one of the events, similar to 9*9 Go in the future. But I don't think that it will ever be special again.

now the real tournament begins
the top three leaders Hiarcs ,Rybka and Junior have not faced each other
also as a side attraction .. all three still have to play the cell phone

can you imagine the hysteria if Hiarcs running on "only" 8 cores wins while Rybka running on a Super Nova Cluster of 5x8 comes in 2 or even 3?(Junior running on 12 cores is only trialing the lead pack by .5)

DS3 is a bit of a disappointment but no surprise really as it is "only" running on a quad

we could be seeing Schachcomputer history in the making Regards

Yes, real tournament is gonna begin, should be an interesting three way battle, I think hardware is quite over rated, especially on higher level :)

Sjeng is doing good despite the hardware disadvantage relative to other engines.

DS 3 is really strong on my Revelation..much stronger than DS 1.8 which is on my Res I
To bad DS 3 didnt go to China with a Milky way Cluster of 40 or even 50 cores
i think it would be amongst the top leaders at the finish

Arm Chair Quarterbacking Regards
