what is the rating guess of iphone+Glaurung

I played a few games at 15:00 game and like it's play, seems much stronger than genius.

I think it is clearly stronger than Genius. I would rate it at 2500+ probably a bit more on the new Iphone 3Gs.

Rating numbers are only relative, so it doesn't make much sense to give an exact number. Glaurung on the iPhone 3G is about 100 times slower than on a single core of a 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, which corresponds to a rating difference of about 400 Elo points, assuming that doubling the CPU speed increases the strength by 60 points. The new iPhone 3 GS has a much faster CPU, but I have no benchmarks and don't know how big the difference is when running Glaurung.

Unfortunately, Glaurung's architecture is not very well suited for the ARM CPU in the iPhone, but it still seems to be strong enough for most people. For those who want something much stronger, I can only advice being patient: I have some pretty big plans for future versions.

And yes, even the current version should be much stronger than Genius.

I have the new iPhone 3GS and would be glad to run a benchmark. Just let me know what position, settings, time, etc.

Any hints as to the big plans for future versions??

Tord -- you have big plans for Glaurung in general or Glaurung specifically on the iPhone?

Thanks,

Roy

100x slower? Is it really that much??

The iphone 3G runs at 400Mhz and the 3Gs at 600Mhz and Shredder on the iphone gets to depth 10 in no time.

Let's wait until the next public version, or the next version I send out to you beta testers (yes, I know, it's been a very long time now, but I haven't forgotten you: Development has just been really slow the last half year). Right now, benchmarking is a little bit impractical, because the engine version I run on my phone is different from the one found in the public iPhone Glaurung.
Any hints as to the big plans for future versions??
No, not yet. I want to surprise the world. :)

On the iPhone specifically. Stockfish is the future of Glaurung on desktop computers, at least until I start doing a complete rewrite (which won't happen any time soon).

Thanks, I'm glad you like it! I'm quite happy with the style, too. It's strange that the style seems much more aggressive and enterprising on the iPhone than on a desktop computer, even when the engine code is identical. It seems like the CPU speed has some influence on the style of play. I'm not sure why.

For Glaurung 2, it really is that much. It depends a lot on the program. I benchmarked a lot of open source programs on the iPhone, and the slowdown factor compared to my 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo varied between (if I recall correctly) 35 and 120. Phalanx did best, and Glaurung was among the worst. In general, bitboard programs seemed to run very slowly on the iPhone (which isn't really a big surprise).

How much slower is the iphone 3gs (600Mhz) than a PIII @ 600Mhz?
