Carlsen-Ivanchuk, Bilbao, position

Post by JuLieN »

After a fantastic start and a mid-tournament performance of over 3000 Elo, Ivanchuk is going through bad times and let the young Carlsen tie with him at the first place of this tournament, with only one round to go now.

Today, he was precisely playing Carlsen, and lost after a tactically very interesting game :

IMO, the climax of the game happened during the 30th move. Carlsen had just played Qh4, leading to this position :

[d]2b1r1k1/2p2r1p/1p5B/p1n1n2P/7Q/P5P1/1P2PP2/3R2K1 b - - 0 30
Chucky answered with Nc6, which led to a catastrophe. But what would be your move or your engine's move ?
Prédateur would play Ne6 instead.

(And during the same round, Aronian defeated Anand. The games are on ChessBase. )

I think the position is lost, doesn't really matter what is played. How does black survive?

Yes... i think the real pressure started here, or just before
16...Qh5
is too ambitious... but it is what Ivanhoe is thinking about, so i'm not sure what else to do.

and Carlsen starts to sink his teeth in

Here is what a testversion of Stockfish thinks, that Ivanchuk did have a problem already here but it has to be said that a large part of the White pluseval is probably King Safety. It is supposed to be less than in Stockfish if there are a lot of defending pieces but at the moment White has more pieces pointed towards the black king. The avantage is larger than in Julien's position, so it may be that that position needs to reevaluated . I do agree with Will that black may be almost lost there but I can't see it in the eval.
