So nothing new regarding chess (only the GPU was upgraded, AFAIK).
thats indeed disapointing. the new hardware is only good for graphics and the higher screen resolution. so we don't have to upgrade our ipad2 into ipad3.

that could change the situation in 2012 completely IMO.

in this year Tegra3 will come out, with 4 cores . also huwai has a strong cpu for mobiles and tablets.

could be the first time other companies can overtake apple because apple failed to increase hardware power (far from GPU stuff).
It's not that easy: people don't buy such devices to play chess (we're a minority ;) ). And when it comes to gfx, the A5X explodes the Tegra3.

So, why didn't Apple increased the number of CPU cores you'll ask? Analysts says that they yet had to stuff a much bigger battery because of the increased screen resolution to power up. Any other company that would include such a screen resolution but with a 4-cores CPU would suffer from a severe battery life reduction. Apple solves technical difficulties one after another. Right now the New iPad's battery delivers 42W, which is yet huge when you think they kept the 10-hours long battery life. Next step will be to keep the same battery life with a four-cores CPU.

They obviously decided that a very high screen resolution and a graphics powerhouse was more important than pure CPU power for the users, and I concur with them. I'm very impressed by the iBooks rendition and the web browsing, right now. iLife and iWork are very impressive too (especially Pages, iMovie and GarageBand). The screen is stunning!

So, having Stockfish running at 2800 Elo instead of 3200 is not that much of a problem to me ^^

Yes, the "3", but the official name is... "New iPad"

I'm using Stockfish, the normal application right from the AppStore, as it's a common benchmark for chess applications. :)

h1a8 wrote:Can you guys post your benchmarks (avg kn/s for starting position) for Stockfish for various mobile devices.

I have Ipod touch 2nd gen and stockfish on glaurung 2.1 gets about 16.5kn/s after a 1min.
I have a Samsung Vibrant and stockfish 1.91 on Droidfish avgs about 111 kn/s after 1min.
I've messed with a Iphone 4 but vaguely remember the benchmark was from 140-150kn/s (I'm 80% sure though).

Can someone post for other mobile devices (like evo, epic, hd2, iphone 4 and 3gs, etc.)
on my samsung galaxy s wifi 3.6 media player with android 2.3.6:
stockfish 2.2.2 70kn/s.

What a shame! Then your Stockfish only runs around 2600-2700 Elo. So on this forum, only Larry (in a good day) has a chance to defeat it. Oh... And Peachy (even in a bad day). ;)

everything you say is true. but nevertheless this year in june/july
the new quadcore devices for tablets AND phones will come out presented by SEVERAL companies such as asus, acer, fujitsu, huwai etc. etc. and for chess suddenly the ipad3 is not anymore the proper device.

that seems to be the first failure of apple after steven jobs died.

Hmmm.... my iPad is updating like 100 apps since two hours, and it will need a few more hours to complete... Maybe this process impacts the CPU enough to decrease SF's node count? I'll do a new test when the update process is finished.

So, updates finished, and I re-did the test:

New iPad: 277kN/s
