What happened to D. Kittinger?

Post by fern »

Some weeks ago he appeared, produced great commotion, wrote lot of post, answered questions, etc and then he disappeared again.
One explanation is that we were not enough interesting to keep his attention.
Another: he is too busy to assist.
Even another is he is sick or in a trip.
In any case I miss him.
I love to get pride saying I am part of a club where lot of chess geniuses programmers participate.

Just average guy regards

remember you can get the DOS version and run it in D-Fend, a great program to use inside windows, no problems even for dummy like me.

I do a lot with D-Fend and old DOS-Wchess.

But it hurts how less WChess gets from my CPU in this way.

So i am dreaming of a UCI-WChess without any changes in the versionnumber.

I played this 40moves in 60 minutes game against the new UCI Gideon by Ed Schröder.

WChess missed a draw by playing 29.Bd2? instead of the better 29.Nc5+ or 29.Bf4.

But his speculative piecesac 23.Bh7+! was a big shot.

If you still have WinXP then you don't need DOS-Box for WChess - it works fine in WinXP with full speed!

And about UCI versions of these DOS oldies: well, who needs a 1001st UCI engine without any GUI, without any own character, interchangable with all other UCI engines?
I don't - I prefer using the original DOS programs as long as possible!

Ohhh man, please explain me how to do.

I am a WIN XP 64bit(!) user.

I really adore Wchess 1.05.

Possibly he surfaced just for a bit of nostalgia, then got over it!

64-bit? That's not good, IIRC Microsoft has completely removed any 16-bit/DOS support from their 64-bit OS (at least since Vista or Win7, I'm not sure about WinXP).

In a 32-bit WinXP WChess and almost all other old DOS chess programs (one big exception are all Rebel programs due to their bad DOS extender) are running perfectly. In Vista/Win7 (32-bit) the problem is that they don't support the fullscreen graphics mode anymore, and so they refuse to run these chess programs.

With 64-bit the best method would certainly be to install also a (minimal) 32-bit version of WinXP as dual-boot system.
Or use VirtualPC or VirtualBox and install Win98 as subsystem, I've read that these Virtual systems are much faster than DOS-Box.
