Elo differences between: Human vs Computer

Post by Sedat Canbaz »

Hello Chess Friends,

I've made some calculations, comparings... between chess programs vs GMs and decided to share here too :)
Actually probably 2 years ago I posted a similar thread, but it was not so clear...

So... this time I hope the below values will be useful for the future...(especially for Engine Elo start calculations)

Code: Select all

     Name Elo + - games score oppo. draws
    Machines 2000-2007                2903   19   19   390   74%  2774   34%
    Kasparov, Garry                   2850   18   18   628   61%  2776   56%
    Machines 1977-1999                2588   11   11  1802   51%  2590   23%
Source for Human vs Computer games (Special thanks to Ed Schröder):
http://www.top-5000.nl/gm-comp/dgt_chesstheatre.htm

More details about the above Elo calculation:
* All games (2192 games) are played by computers against Humans
* Machines = based on different chess engines mainly played by:
- Fritz,Shredder,Junior,Hiarcs,Rebel and plus many other chess programs
* Machines 2000-2007 = games played between 2000 up to 2007 years
* Machines 1977-1999 = games played between 1977 up to 1999 years
* The rating database is based on 29381 games (2192 engine games, rest belong to GMs games)
* Bayeselo program is used and Garry Kasparov's Elo is fixed to 2850 Elo

So...my estimation on Pentium MMX 233, Fritz 5.32 to be minimum 2500 Elo
Actually I think Fritz 5.32 is approx. 2600 Elo, but I will prefer 100 Elo less ...
Note also that doubling the processor speed, mostly of the Engines perform min. 50 Elo points stronger

Code: Select all

 60kns =  Fritz 5.32 2500 Elo  (Pentium MMX 233 260 MHz 1 core)
120kns =  Fritz 5.32 2550 Elo
240kns =  Fritz 5.32 2600 Elo  (Pentium 3 500 MHz 1 core)
480kns =  Fritz 5.32 2650 Elo  (Pentium 3 1.00 GHz 1 core)
960kns =  Fritz 5.32 2700 Elo  (Pentium 4 2.40 GHz 1 core)
1920kns = Fritz 5.32 2750 Elo  (QX9650 3.00 GHz 1 core)

Btw, In my opinion,
SSDF are CCRL ratings are more near (in Elo measuring) to GM's Elo points
So... I plan to test Fritz 10 1 core (on my QX9650 3.0GHz) in my latest scratch testing
And for more accurate Elo rating,, I hope to fix Fritz 10 1 core's Elo at 2850 Elo points
Note: Fritz 10 1 core is approx. 250 Elo points stronger than Fritz 5.32 (based on CEGT/CCRL ratings)
In other words, since today I plan for SCCT ratings to be more near to Human GMs elo ratings

Hi Sedat,

January 2012 GM Hickl and myself made an interview vs. GM Georg Meier (around 2.650, at second in Germany) in my home for the chess Magazine (SCHACHWELT).

http://www.schach-welt.de/news-ticker/archiv-seite-02

GM Meier plays during this interview a game on my DGT board vs. Shredder 12 with 1 Core on Dual Core Intel 7300 with the time control 40 / 10. I asked him to the playing strength of Shredder 12 and he gave the answere ... around 2.800 with 40/10. Meyer plays his favorite opening. During the game we talk about what GM trying in such games (trying to make the full point in opening or trying to hold remis in middlegame / endgame).

We discuss a bit in CSS Forum about it at this time. I set SWCR1 ELO on 2.800 and the same doing Ingo Bauer (with IPON) and CEGT set to Shredder 2.800 too.

Best

Hello Frank,

Thanks for your interest...and I am happy to see you on this thread !

Yes...it seems GM Meier is a good anti- computer player ;)

But can you ask him (GM Meier) please to play hundrets of games against Junior x64 1c, Hiarcs 1c, Shredder 12 x64 1 core

And to to be sure, we need many games...
Of course its will be great if GM Meier will participate in serious tournaments (human vs machine)
or at least for this... we need to watch the matches in LIVE :)

And if there will be such GM Meier vs machine match, I wish to prepare a opening book against anti - human style :)

And be sure then with pleasure I can add his games to my current used rating database and then we can calculate...

But however, even if GM Meier has a good performance against Shredder 12 x64 1c,
it does not mean that all Grandmasters have same strong anti-computer style
or even if he is a good anti- computer player against Shredder 12 x64 1c, what about rest top chess engines ? can he hold the same performance with other strong single processor engines too ?

My dear friend, please check the below links:
http://www.rebel.nl/resu.htm
http://www.hiarcs.com/Games/Mercosur2009/mercosur09.htm

Do you see the performance?
Note that even those engines are much older versions (weaker than latest release) and they played on much slower processors than yours

Note also that ın the current rating database includes 1800 games (grandmaster vs machine), I think its enough data for making a comparison...

And as far as I know you updated your hardware to:
i7-4770K (4.3GHz) = 7,5, that means Fritz values are approx. 3600 kns, right ?

Source:
http://www.sedatcanbaz.com/chess/?page_id=28

Code: Select all

Hardware-Processor        Speed      Cores     kN/s
Intel Pentium MMX 233      260 MHz     1         61
So, your super fast hardware is approx. 60 times faster than Intel Pentium MMX 233 260 MHz

Just imajine my dear Frank...what will be the Elo difference nowadays...!!

Btw, ask please mr. Stefan Meyer-Kahlen, even I expect that he will be agree with me...
Note that approx. 16 years ago, Shredder 2.0 was on level around 2500 Elo

Forget the latest Shredder 12 x64 1c,
even the old one (Shredder 2.0)is expecting to be performed approx. 2700-2800 Elo on your hardware

Personally, if I was in your shoes, I would set for Shredder 12 x64 1core: 3000 Elo

But of course it's your right...its a just recommendation, I just wanted to help to rating creators...

Dea Frank,

I have just picked the games played in the past, I mean especially the games, which are played by different old Shredder versions and the results are just great, well-done to Shredder team (also to Hiarcs,Fritz,Rebel,Junior,Chess Tiger...teams) !!

Image

Btw, actually as far as I know Igno is from Shredder team, so he should now better (than us ) Shredder 12 engine's Elo strength ;)

Re: Elo differences between: Human vs Computer

Post by Sedat Canbaz »

Btw, why I preferred especially Fritz 10 as main engine to be started/fixed at 2850 Elo

1) Man-Machine World Chess Championship (2006)
Deep Fritz vs Kramnik: Computer wins match by 4:2
*During that time and under these conditions, probably Fritz's strength was approx. 3000 Elo
*Due to Deep Fritz is played as MP engine, with one core I expect to be around 2850

2) Man-Machine World Chess Championship (2003)
Garry Kasparov 2850 Elo vs X3D Fritz = match ended in 2-2 draw
*X3D Fritz is approx. 100 Elo weaker than Fritz 10

3) Man-Machine World Chess Championship (2002)
Deep Fritz vs Kramnik 2829 Elo = match ended in 4-4 draw
*Fritz 8 is approx. 130 Elo weaker than Fritz 10

Code: Select all

CCRL:
Fritz 10         2797
Fritz 9          2751
Fritz 8          2667
Fritz 6 Light    2537
Fritz 5.32       2542

CEGT:
Fritz 10        2637
Fritz 9         2593
Fritz 8 Bilbao  2535
Fritz 7         2528
Fritz 6         2460
Fritz 5.32      2430
So, I have a question to all ?
How is that possible, if Fritz is 200-300 Elo weaker than the Top GMs,
then how Fritz managed to finish in a draw in 2002, in 2003 and in 2006 to win ???

I understand that Deep Fritz is played as MP engine during Man vs Machine matches,
but anyway let's calculate the Elo performance between 1 core and using more cores:
https://sites.google.com/site/computers ... ct-auto232

Btw, I've already run a similar Hardware Speed Test,
but unfortunately currently I can't visit it, there are server problems:
www.sedatchess.110mb.com/

But as far as I remember, there was approx. 300 Elo between Celeron 1.70 GHz and QX9650

Note also that if I split the games separately from Machines 1977-1999, the played games by Fritz,Hiarcs,Shredder,Rebel,Junior,Chess Tiger, then probably these top engines will be ranked approx. 2650-2700 Elo points, even 15 years ago...!!!

End of story... and let's play :)

Sedat,
I also believe Deep Fritz 10 was probably at least on par with the strongest humans in 2006. On faster hardware it should be somewhat stronger. Your estimate of 2850 for 1 core seems to be right on.

Hello dear Carl,

I am glad that you see the reality...!!

Actually I can give you another example about the current issue,
Our top engines/latest hardwares/superior books are something like we drive Ferrari, Mercedes, BMW...

In other words, our machines can hold more than 90 km per hour :)

Hello there,

I have just run a few handicap games (on my i5-3210M 2.50GHz) to see how the engines are stronger nowadays...
Note that I picked The King 3.50 engine (estimated Elo with one core to be around 2750-2800 Elo) and played as Black with all pieces
Note also that during the match, both chess engines are played with one core and ponder on
I can say only one thing, Stockfish (even with such disadvantages) can managed to win, well-done !

1) Without 2 pawns : Stockfish won (Note: Stockfish played without 2 pawns)
2) Without Knight : Draw (Note: Stockfish played without 1 Knight)
3) Without Bishop : The King won (Note: Stockfish played without 1 Bishop)
4) Without 3 pawns : Draw (Note: Stockfish played without 3 pawns)

Re: Elo differences between: Human vs Computer

Post by Sedat Canbaz »

I have decided to publish a few standings more...

Deep Junior 6's good performance even 14 years ago ( average 2676 Elo):

Image

Even more than 20 years ago, not bad performance by Fritz 2

Image

Very good performance by Fritz 10, performed around 2900-3000 Elo:

Image

Another clear proof (well-done to Rybka team) that nowadays the machines are min 500 Elo stronger than GMs:

I found running such handicap matches very interesting!
So I have just continued playing a few handicap game more ...

Who knows?? in case of handicap conditions...
For example, Stockfish vs Grandmaster, maybe we will see similar results too :) ?!

1)Stockfish vs TSCP: 1-0 (Note: Stockfish played without Rook)
2)Stockfish vs Supra: 1-0 (Note: Stockfish played without Rook)
3)Stockfish vs TSCP: 0-1 (Note: Stockfish played without Queen)
4)Stockfish vs Supra: 0-1 (Note: Stockfish played without Queen)

Note also that TSCP 1.8's strength is approx. 1700 Elo and Supra 18 is approx. 1400 Elo
Where Stockfish 070114 x64 1c (at full strength) is expecting to be performed approx. 3300 Elo

Btw, who are interested...can check also Rybka 4.1 WP (without pawn) results:
