Stockfish - Decrease of nodes in endgame positions

Post by fastgm »

I have made the following observation.
The nodes in endgame positions decrease with many threads.
Can someone confirm this?

Hardware:
Dual Opteron 6376, 2.3 GHz, 32 Threads

Engine:
Stockfish 200414 64 SSE4.2 (2048 MB Hash)

Can someone confirm this?
Yes, I have observed this in the TCEC games (16 cores).

I thought the issue was the Max Threads per Split Point restriction, but this restriction has now been removed. The problem persists, unfortunately. (It may have improved a bit though, and there actually was a game where nps went to around 40MN/s as would be expected. In other games nps was as low as 7000KN/s, though, or even lower.)

In these endings, once the search focusses on positions with promoted pawns (i.e. queens), the problem disappears. So it has to do with the limited number of moves in positions with pawns and at most one or two minors. Still, other engines (e.g. Komodo) do not seem to suffer from this problem.

Some questions:
- What OS do you use.
- With Idle Threads Sleep to false and as little else running on the system as possible, what is CPU usage of SF
(a) in "normal" positions when the low nps problem does not occur;
(b) in such endgame position where the low nps problem does occur.
- With 16/32 threads, does it help to increase Min Split Depth, or does that make the problem worse?
- Same for decreasing Min Split Depth.

(Note that Min Split Depth is automatically set to 7 internally when using many threads if you leave the UCI setting at the default value of 0. So increasing means values of 8 and higher, decreasing means values of 6 and lower.)

Until recently I thought cpu usage should always be 100% if Idle Threads Sleep is set to false, unless there is something wrong with how the OS schedules threads on cores. However, I have now realised that SF uses pthread mutexes for locking, and these may cause search threads to sleep even if Idle Threads Sleep is set to false. So a low CPU usage would seem to indicate too much contention on these locks.

Hi Ronald,

Yes, increasing MinSplitDepth for the endgame should definitely help.
That's at least my experience from many, many tries to tweak those parameters.

Also limiting # of threads per split point in endgames is important. No point in having more threads than reasonable moves to search. But min split depth is not enough for endgames, unfortunately. Takes more work and the mutex locks are pretty bad, period...

Certainly it makes no sense to have more threads than moves at a split node, but I do not see the point of limiting the number of threads more than that. If you have say 8 cores and 8 moves at a node (after having searched the first move) with remaining depth 17, it makes little sense to only let 5 threads search these 8 moves and hope that the other 3 threads join in at depth 15 or lower.

Max Threads per Split Point was removed from SF, which seems to help at least somewhat. But it did not solve the problem.

Some questions:
- What OS do you use.
- With Idle Threads Sleep to false and as little else running on the system as possible, what is CPU usage of SF
(a) in "normal" positions when the low nps problem does not occur;
(b) in such endgame position where the low nps problem does occur.
- With 16/32 threads, does it help to increase Min Split Depth, or does that make the problem worse?
- Same for decreasing Min Split Depth.
OS ist Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit

(a) Initial Position: 16 threads, Min Split Depth=0, Idle Threads Sleep = false - CPU usage between 47-50%
(a) Initial Position: 32 threads, Min Split Depth=0, Idle Threads Sleep = false - CPU usage between 78-98%, mostly over 90%
CPU usage seems OK at least for 16 threads, and for 32 threads contention on mutexes does not seem to be the explanation fo the very low nps.

If I understand correctly, nps improves with higher Min Split Depth once higher search depths are reached. I guess this make sense, as the tree will then contain a sufficient number of sufficiently large subtrees that can be searched in parallel.

The limit on Min Split Depth should probably be removed or at least be considerably increased. If you compile Stockfish yourself you can do this quite easily in ucioptions.cpp. But a too high Min Split Depth might affect nps for middlegame positions (difficult to know without testing). Maybe SF should set Min Split Depth as a function of the number of cores and the type of position (and/or the number of splits per second or so).

I understand very little of this, but would it not be better to conduct the test with time to depth, instead of nodes per second? Is there are real slow down in searching? For instance if a program does not count hash hits as nodes, and many same transpositions in the hash table would get visited by separate threads because of search inefficiency, they all would not be counted as nodes. But I am sure you would have thought of that too. Could there be some contention on the hashtable then instead, with many threads trying to read the same transpositions and then there is not enough data bandwidth to transposition table in cache or in main memory or something?
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

The nps speedup from going from 1 to N cores for a particular engine should be roughly the same for middlegame and endgame positions.

For SF this is not the case for N=16 and N=32.

For an smp implementation it might be more difficult to do well on an endgame position, but there are implementations that have no problems with it.

For 16 cores it is not a big problem, as it only seems to occur in endgame positions with very few pieces where SF reaches very large depths anyway. But still it would be nice to improve this.

For 32 cores the problem might occur also for other types of positions (I don't know).

Stockfish now formally supports 128 cores, so clearly the idea is that it should do as well as reasonably possible on many cores. But of course it is difficult to test this without such hardware.

What's the difference if you set 128 threads on a 4 cores machine ?
