Komodo loses the TCEC supermatch but wins the final game!

Post by M ANSARI »

What a great TCEC super final, it seems sad that it has to all end. A fantastic performance by SF and most certainly the bar is going to be set at a much higher level if the other top competitors want to compete. But in the final game Komodo showed that it has a better evaluation in some positions and proceed to totally outplay SF in an endgame where a queen was exchanged for pieces. In fast time controls it always seems that testing requires that you elevate the value of a queen as the queen is able to create many tactical threats due to its dynamic nature. Manually changing the evaluation hurts elo in lightning tests. Houdini was especially well known overly valuating a queen ... but I always felt that if there is no direct tactical loss of material, and pieces somehow manage to coordinate, they will easily outplay a lonely queen. In this game, Komodo gave up the queen for pieces and showed a nice +.90 evaluation, while SF saw it as actually a - evaluation. If you love chess engines, this is what you always want to see ... two very different evaluations in the same position ... who will be right and who will be wrong. Watch the game and decide for yourself in this brilliant game!

Yes the critical position out of the opening! I wonder if Komodo's move is a TN? It really seemed like a risky choice but Komodo seemed very happy with that line. However I will say that SF also thought that this was the best line in its PV. The evaluations though were totally different.

Stockfish 240514 64 SSE4.2 also chooses exf6 in this position (sacrificing the queen), but does not see the resulting advantage that Komodo saw:

Code: Select all

info depth 44 seldepth 68 score cp 3 nodes 108281097817 nps 20250498 time 5347083 multipv 1 pv e5f6 f5d3 f6e7 c6e7 f1d3 e8g8 a1e1 d8d7 a2a3 a8e8 h2h3 e7g6 f4g3 d6d5 h1f1 c7c6 c3d1 e8e1 f1e1 f8e8 d3f5 d7d8 g3c7 d8a8 d1e3 g6f8 c2c3 g7g6 f5d3 f7f6 c7g3 a8d8 d2c1 f8d7 c1b1 b7b5 b1a2 g8g7 g3d6
Stockfish switches to exf6 at depth 5, and never wavers.

My database (Mega Database 2014) shows 10.e5 as a TN.

If 10.e5! turns out to be only chosen by Komodo, then for certain it will be a very very interesting engine to analyze openings and to create new TN. I think there was a 1.01 difference in evaluation between Komodo and SF at one time. SF depends a lot on its incredibly deep search and in this case it simply is not deep enough and beyond even SF's search horizon. Komodo bases its evaluation on simply evaluation itself without needing to look as deep.

Stockfish anticipated e5 in reply to its ninth move; see the engine output included in the pgn in your original post:

Code: Select all

9... Bf6 d=37, pd=e5, mt=00:03:28, tl=02:01:01, s=18654 kN/s, n=3881869790, pv=Bf6 e5 Bf5 exf6 Bxd3 fxe7 Nxe7 Bxd3 O-O Rae1 Qd7 a3 Rae8 h3 a6 Kc1 b5 Re2 Ng6 Be3 c6 Rhe1 Re7 Bd2 Rfe8 b3 Rxe2 Rxe2 Rxe2 Nxe2
Here's a SF analysis of the position after 9 ...Bf6:

Code: Select all

info depth 46 seldepth 70 score cp 9 nodes 220447043105 nps 20109696 time 10962226 multipv 1 pv e4e5 g4f5 e5f6 f5d3 f6e7 c6e7 f1d3 e8g8 a1e1 d8d7 h1f1 h7h6 f4g3 a8e8 d2c1 e7f5 g3f4 e8e1 f1e1 f5e7 b2b3 f8e8 f4g3 e7c8 e1f1

Yes was a very impressive game and it was interesting to listen to all the chatter about which engine had the correct evaluation. It is hard to believe that the King's Gambit is playable at all these days on a human level, but really with the 2 top super engines it is almost unthinkable. With the King's Gambit accepted white sets himself up with a dangerously weak King that can easily backfire if one tiny mistake is made in development or tactical oversight. What we saw was an absolutely masterful play by Komodo that slowly and carefully took time to move the King to safety and then slowly started placing pieces on good squares and in one case gave a pawn up to give its pieces total coordination and an absolute strangle hold on the position. Sure the queen sac was pretty, but it was the entire setup and plan that really stands out. What really makes this game an eye opener is that Komodo evaluation understood the position while SF and Houdini were totally clueless until it was way too late. This could be a case that shows some problems in relying totally on lightening games to tune the evaluation. It is clear that both Houdini and SF value the queen much more than 3 pieces as it probably tests really well in fast time control games ... but looks like at LTC it can backfire. A beautiful game to see played that will go down as one of the best every played by an engine!

One interesting tidbit in this game was how totally immobilized the black queen was. Black queen was not able to move from move 12 to move 34 !!!!
