Fizbo 1.5 (29Aug2015) syzygy problems, again!

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi there,

my syzygy under:
c:\Chess\_syzygybases (without wdl and dtz extra directorys, all 3-4 pieces are added in the same directory under c:\Chess\_syzygybases

But I try out ... with wdl and dtz subdirectory and RTBZDIR & RTBWDIR subdirectorys (can be see with text editor in fizbo.exe file).

With the result that under Shredder Classic GUI Fizbo will not load the sygyzy bases.

I don't know what is wrong ... try so many things out but without success.

Maybe an other reader have an idea.

If not, Fizbo 1.5 POP x64 will start in my rating list without endgame bases. Sorry, but I give it up after so many hours I try it out with all the different Fizbo.exe files since 1.31 are available.

Here my current Shredder config file:

Code: Select all

[ENGINE]
Name=Fizbo 1.5 POP x64
Author=Youri Matiounine
Filename=C:\Chess\Shredder_12\Engines\Fizbo\Fizbo_15-x64.exe
[OPTIONS]
SyzygyPath=c:\Chess\_syzygybases

Try like this Frank to see if Fizbo find the table.
1. double click the exe file
2. type uci
3. type

Code: Select all

setoption name SyzygyPath value c:\Chess\_syzygybases
Something like this.

Code: Select all

Found 0 syzygy tablebases.
uci
id name Fizbo 1.5
id author Youri Matiounine
option name Threads type spin default 1 min 1 max 60
option name Hash type spin default 128 min 1 max 16384
option name SyzygyPath type string default c:\
option name Ponder type check default false
uciok
setoption name SyzygyPath value C:\MyFiles\egtb\sy\syzygy
Found 145 syzygy tablebases.
If it can find the table in console then the issue is probably in the gui.

Right. that is what i would do - try it in console. At start-up it looks in directories specified in environment variables DTZDIR and WDLDIR. And on command "SyzygyPath" it looks at all the directories supplied.

One limitation that i know of: i only tested it with all syzygy files located in one directory; if they are spread out across multiple directories, Fizbo will probably not be able to use them.

Hi Youre, Ferdinand,

I found out my problem.
I am using 4-pieces Syzygy bases.
Fizbo await the 3-4-5 pieces Syzygy bases.

If I try out with 3-4 pieces ... endgame databases will not load.
With 3-4-5 pieces I can used the bases now (all in on directory).

Really a problem because all other engines in my rating list using 3-4 pieces (Nalimov, Shredderbases, other bases, not 5-pieces).

I don't know what I should do ...
Fizbo without syzygy bases or in this case with 5-pieces syzygy bases vs. all others with 4-pieces syzygy bases.

Hi there,

in this case Fizbo 1.5 POP x64 will start without Syzygy 3-4-5 pieces. Must do that or it's against my own rules because all other engines started with max. 3-4 pieces.

Best solution I think.
I hope Youri can changed that for the next release?
Means that Fizbo can used 3-4 pieces or 3-4-5 pieces or 3-4-5-6 pieces.

Version 1.4 not tested by myself and I will not longer wait to added a newer version from Fizbo in my Rating List.

I will see if i can change this for the next release. But for now there is not much i can do, so just run Fizbo without tablebases. I don't think this would impact performance by much.

Just give Fizbo the path to your 3-4 men table. If it can use those 3-4 men available tables then fine if not just continue with your tournaments.

Hi Youri,

test is still running now.
See the link in my other thread!

Yes, if possible I will test the next available version with 3-4 pieces. I think too that the different is very small, max. maybe 5 Elo. My games are without resign ... will see what engine calculate undo the end of the game. Using 3-4 pieces for the reason only not to see endless endgames ... move average with 3-4 pieces endgame databases is around 3-4 moves lesser compare to games without resign mode / factor and without endgame databases.

Much more important for Fizbo ...
Version 1.5 should hold the nice playing style versions 1.2 / 1.31 have. Also important that your engine is now UCI compatible. That is a good step in developing!

Thanks for your very nice work.
I have since a while a lot of fun in visiting Fizbo games.

Good luck for this test-run ... after CEGT results I think engine should have between 2820 - 2840 Elo.

Hi Ferdinand,

yes I do that ... after thinking a short time about it.

At the moment two test-runs are still running to the same time. I am on weekend in Berlin and my machines should run because if I start one test-run the test ended Friday and my machines are doing three days nothing.

BTW:
Hope a newer Deuterium version will be soon availalbe. Very interested all the time on your development.

And ... I think my test-system works fine now. I am very happy with 2050 games test-runs. Only my opening book system is clearly to many work ... need to many time. To complicated what I do in optimizing the opening book again and again. It's works good but it's to many work.

Hi Youri,

time management with 40 moves in 10 minutes "repeadly" is very hard. After the first 110 games, three games lost on time one move before the time control (39 moves).

No problem from myself, lost on time games will be replayed all the time in my Rating list (to produced a clear database is important for me). But you should try to changed that for the next release version!
