I don't think that fine piece to be cooked, Mike, if you yet still think so, give a winning line else than author's solution, no matter how long to mate, that's not a mate in x- study.
Question is simply, if there is a white win after not playing 1.Nf7 at all.
I dont' see any

As far as I can see, there are only two not losing moves for White here, both leading to more or less forced draw:

Thanks for that pgn subvariation for Mate in 55, saved it on my backups.

Here's a puzzles from yacpdb position 67722 published as Mate in #42,
but there seems to be a faster mate in 24.

It's mate in 22 with 11.fg5 (not 11.Kd3).
I have this position as Mate in 20. The best is 8.Kc4. In Chest.epd says Mate in 20.

You are correct Ignacio, actually I checked this position with
ChestUCI.epd but I scrolled down to Mate in 42 section and
didn't found it there. I should have opened the epd file in text mode
and just do a ctrl+s search of this positions string to confirm if this is
already included in Chest epd file.

It was there at ChestUCI.epd position 6025 with the relevant switches for
chest engine to solve this mate, but really irritating when it was also listed
at yacpdb as mate in #42. I have also noticed at yacpdb where some
were Mate in 80 or 90 but position is actually just a mate in 1, and it was
not a selfmate nor helpmate. It was standard chess puzzle but incorrectly
setup.

Ok enough of my rants and continue with some long puzzles.

Same output {#M39} shown by 32-bit Critter with 5-men-tb after 8 minutes of crunching.

I think ChestUCI.epd is about to run out of zugzwang long checkmates.
Almost all were already solved, didn't touch those position with exact switches (config settings) for Chest Mate Finder. Lost interest in yacpdb with wrong label and wrong positions. Showing mate in 1 but the label is Mate in 70+ :(

Haven't found any solution for this position online.
Position not found in yacpdb nor in Arpad's DB.
Bring to the corner, return the N back, triangulate, send the N to
field again for the final zugzwang.

Only problem with this Mate puzzle is the 50-move-rule which is reached
because no pawns nor captures would be made within 50 moves.

According to this site,

http://www.arves.org/arves/index.php/en ... -1905-1975

(second puzzle with dia) it's from Karl Fabel. Solution- .pgn there stops just at the point, where 50-moves-boundary could be reached with 52...Nd6, an alternative move which otherwise would be mate in only 7 more moves).

50 moves- boundary is not to be counted as for studies.

As you see your line and the one given at the endgame- study- site is identical disregarding the transpositions and the missing end of the latter one.

Mate in #44 ChestUCI.epd nbr 6290

Post by MikeGL »

Hi Peter,

This one is beautiful N v B, and solution is almost there,
but I am stumped on the position after 5...Bd4! of
black which seems to hold and avoid mate. Already excited when I notied 5...Be5? is a blunder due to mate announcement of McBrain.

Is there a win on the final position of above sequence?
Or did the engine already saw a cook with no progress for white?

This is the position after 5...Bd4 of black, is there a win?
