I loaded arena 3.5.1 with opental. set level to 1 sec /move. (above picosend/move I have no chance. ) moved p k4 with white. It did not respond. loaded stockfish and moved almost straight away. 

Which operating system are you using?

Also, the OpenTal distribution contains three different .exe files. Try opening each of them. A black window should appear. Type "bench" and see which one responds. Use that one.

windows xp. that maybe the problem when I click on opental_x32 I get a message 'opental_x32 is not a valid win32 application.'

But could a Tal like engine could do better even vs a human world champion than a true top engine can, by forcing the human into too many complexities?

Definitely. Ed was a pioneer in this respect with his "Anti-GM mode" he developed and destroyed Vishy Anand with in 1998.

I have had good results (solid draws without the need for anti-computer tricks) against strong engines which are above 2700-2900, but I can barely reach a playable middlegame against OpenTal.

That being said, I've only played it in blitz so much (too busy in the last months).

To be honest, I'd LOVE to see a human IM or GM to challenge OpenTal and might even sponsor it at some point.

Me too, although I think Magnus would be the perfect guy to deconstruct OpenTal's play.

Other GMs might have a more difficult time though.

I dare say, some GMs would be humiliated by this level of attacking.

Hi Brendan, I think you did an outstanding job creating such a dynamic attacking personality. Computer chess normal grandmaster strength engines that throw caution to the wind at the expense of correctness are more exciting than stodgy and boring engines such as SF and the like no matter how strong they might be.

I posted a game that I played against Opental in another topic but I'm not sure anyone saw it as not a single person posted a reply. Maybe I'm being a bit vain but I am very happy with my play.
