Trojan in OpenTal1??

Post by fern »

My windows defender said it has a Trojan and erased it.
Just an attack of hysteria?
Someone else?

I compiled it from the source and have no issues (macOS).

I would re-download from this site just to be sure. All virus checks ID many false positives. Try another scanner , like avast and then add it to the exception list.

My rule of thumb is to listen to your gut - if you think there might be a problem. chances are, there is a problem. You instinctively learn from past experiences and you should follow that. Some of my worse decisions ever made were when I did not pay attention to what my instincts were telling me.

It's akin to driving on the highway and you noticed someone else is driving on the highway it either not staying within the lines, driving too slow , driving too fast, tailgating you or somebody else, on the phone, yada, yada. those are the drivers you want to avoid like the plague - let them pass you, let them cut in front of you, whatever they want to do, let them do it. You just want to be as far away as possible from that driver. The life you save might be your own.

Yes, intuition is greatly useful in life, and sometimes makes you do counter-intuitive things you'd never have done, and the reason may not be obvious at first, or even long term, but at some point, the explanation of why going with your gut was best arises, so I no longer do the most logical things if I get a bad feeling about them.

I do not know If I have intuition or not to everything, but in any case in order to take care of my life i apply a system i call "defense in depth", three rings of protection for everything.
Some maybe could call that paranoia, but is is healthy....

That's what I don't like with windows defender. Keeps on deleting some important binary on
my system. It once deleted a very important file on my system doing language translation.
VirusTotal giving 0 and hence clean. But Windows Defender keeps on removing it,
probably mistaken as keyGen by Windows Defender. Quite an irritating feature,
when I don't have any control of my system anymore.

But, the intuition tip of Mike above is also very important.

The thing also uses system resources like CPU and RAM, causing general slowdown. Plus, the first time I installed Windows 10 and used their Edge Browser, I was infected by a trojan, so Windows Defender did nothing.

At least the thing is easy to shut down.

True. Better to just disable that thing and use an alternative AV software.
