Is the Blackmar-Diemar Gambit playable?

Post by BeyondCritics » Thu Jul 05, 2018 4:14 pm

Recently i stumbled over the old Blackmar–Diemer Gambit

which has apparently a long standing bad reputation of being an incorrect opening for protesters and occultists, which can explain why it is comparatively seldomly played. My question is now: How should i defend optimally, if i get this position with black in a serious game? Can you help out?

After 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e4!? dxe4 (alleged best) 4.f3 exf3 5.Nxf3 c6 (Stockfish@home) and now 6.Bd3 Bg4 stockfish prevents the loss of the pawn on d4 with 7.Be3

I can almost guarantee you, that a Blackmar-Diemer player will likely try 7.h3!? which stockfish answers with 7...Bxf3 8.Qxf3 Qxd4. Despite being two pawns up, stockfish evaluation fluctuates only around 0.6 in his favour. Following some main line leads after many adventures to an even position, which is not very convincing, given the considerable risk for black.
Therefore i have switched to 5..g6 in the mean time, which looks as solid as it can be. I do not under estimate this gambit and i don't consider it as the rightful domain of freaks.
Now, that is your opinion? Would you play that gambit with white in a serious encounter?

Cerebellum gives -0.29 after 3. e4, which may not even be a draw for white.

Sorry, I have to disagree: -0.29 is objectively a slight advantage for black when shown from stockfish.
But what is the line anyway?

Because we see the word "Gambit" in the opening, it requires at least 40 ply of analysis by a top engine to get an idea if any of these positions are good for the side to move or not.

This list also contains the interior (non-leaf) nodes which are important to consider so that you do not get ambushed along the way to your plan.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

The BDG is playable up to IM level. Below master level everything is playable, including the Grob and the Damiano Defense.
Is it sound? Most GMs would answer in negative, I imagine, but it's a formidable weapon among sub-2200 players and commands a nearly-religious zeal among its adherents.

You cannot seriously expect to be taught how to defend against it in a forum post, or even a single thread. Thick books have been written on the subject, the most recent and probably the most authoritative one, by Christoph Scheerer, at over 300 pages.

If you cannot spare the time or the money explore the BDG section of ChessPub.

If you want a quick fix, meet 1.d4 with 1...Nf6 rather than 1...d5 and only push the d-pawn in response to 2.Nc3. If White persists in going for the BDG setup (1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e4?!) take on e4 with the knight. This line is known as the Huebsch Gambit and is distinctly inferior to BDG main lines. Personally I meet 1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3/f3 with 3...e5.

Sorry, I have to disagree: -0.29 is objectively a slight advantage for black when shown from stockfish.
But what is the line anyway?
"May not even be a draw" vs. "a slight advantage for Black" -- where is the disagreement? At any rate, relying on Stockfish's (or for that matter any other engine's) output this early in the opening is utterly pointless, even if you leave the engine running for hours. Here's one recent example: SF doesn't see mate in 8.

Yeah, a lot of good 40-ply analysis did in the above-mentioned thread.

Thanks for your input. What software/script do you recommend to analyze an epd-file on linux?

I use a modified version of Stockfish.
It writes the analysis directly to disk, so you can analyze a big pile of EPD records in one go, using the benchmark command.

You can get the modified code from here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WEAztK ... sp=sharing

To build it on linux, extract the 7zip archive into a directory of your choice.
Then build binaries with:
./mk.bash

which will build a binary that needs sse instructions and one that does not.

You can edit the bash script to suit your needs, or you can also use the makefile to build it if you want different options.

Your command to analyze will be something like this:
Start Stockfish, and then give this command:
bench 4096 11 40 /usr/myself/bmx.epd

where the first number (in the example 4096) is the size in megabytes of memory to use.
the second number is the number of threads to use (11 in the example)
the third number is the depth in plies (40 plies in this case)
and the last command line item is the file of EPD positions (/usr/myself/bmx.epd in this case)

When the analysis completes, you will have a file of analyzed data at the depth of analysis you requested.

The file, which will be named Searchlog.txt unless you name it something else, will contain entries that look like this:

Code: Select all

Searching: rnbqkb1r/pp2pp1p/5p2/2p5/3Pp3/2N5/PPP2PPP/R2QKBNR w KQkq - 0 1
