I've just splashed out on ChessBase's Fritz 16 package. It comes with "Fritz 13 SE" already installed (as well as Fritz 16 aka Rybka 4.1). The engine dialog says it's a native ChessBase engine by "Franz Morsch". It has a few options and can only uses one thread. I've done a brief search and can't find much about it at all.
Anyone have the scoop on this engine? Strength? Style? Last of the Morsch engines?
Steve
P.S. What's Franz Morsch doing these days? Is he still programming chess engines?

i) Fritz 16 isn't Rybka 4.1. It's not much better, but Vas has done work on the engine and it's closer to what Rybka 5 would have been
ii) I'll bet you Fritz 13 isn't a Morsch engine. I think his last contribution was Fritz 10.1 (and a damn fine engine it was too)

Yeah I'm pretty sure Fritz 10 or 11 were the last Morsch engines.Werewolf wrote: ↑Sun Sep 16, 2018 7:57 pmWell here's my two pence:Steve Maughan wrote: ↑Sun Sep 16, 2018 7:28 pm I've just splashed out on ChessBase's Fritz 16 package. That guy's engines were fantastic and had a distinct tactical style.
I have fond memories of buying Fritz 7 from a bookstall the month it came out.
It's a shame he never made anything UCI/WB compatible.

Hi Steve!
I still have the Deep Fritz 13 engine, pity it doesn't run on my latest systems, but it was a typical Morsch- engine, even if it did use more nullmove- pruning than the legendary F10 e.g. Yet tactically strong, better in search then in static eval, with good endgame- knowledge and using Fritz- Bases (in addition to Nalimovs), which were special bitbases, as far as I remember. "Endgame Turbo" was a collection of important 6MOB-tbs to be bought on CD, of course I had it too.
For the times, when it was modern, time to depth was top of the top then, so were the nodes/sec.
After 13 came Gyula Horvath's 14 and then 15, which was Rybka, like 16 too.

The 2013 release of Deep Fritz 14 switched engines from the original author Frans Morsch to Gyula Horváth, author of Pandix. A long time participant in world computer championships since 1984, Pandix was substantially rewritten in 2009, and has been a strong contender since then.
Fritz 15 was released on November 25, 2015 with many new features, including switching to Vasik Rajlich's famous Rybka engine.[5]
Fritz 16 was released on November 12, 2017 with a shift towards catering for players who want to play against the computer with a chance of winning. This version again uses the Rybka engine.[6]

Re: Fritz 13 SE?
I had a look at this SE version and it doesn't seem to be much different from the regular single-thread-only Fritz 13. I did note one difference: from the startpos at d=20 one advocated 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 and the other 1.d4 d5 2.Nc3.

Re: Fritz 13 SE?
Is Fritz16 a good Chess program that help people like me close to 1900 USCF to improve chess, or there might be a better tutor chess program around ?
Who is 17 years old GM Gukesh 2nd at the Candidate in Toronto?
