Leela : Lc0 crashing with RTX 2080/ is 2080 Ti worth it?

Post by tturgut »

1) crash: Did any one tlese have any problems with high temps with RTX 2080 ?

Temps go to 82-85 after a while (idle at 37) with lc0 and (occasionally, not always) black screen comes (computer is stil on, GPU crashes)???

Doesn't always happen. latest NVDIA driver improved the problem. also latest windows 10 update. EVGA g3 850w PSU. 2080 Founders edition.

EVGA Xtreme 1, and Tech Power GPUz downloaded.

2) (2070) vs 2080 vs 2080 Ti: is there a real benefit for leela? (also with 2070, that should come out in a week) ?

I understand that calculation numbers are almost twice with 2080 ti vs 2070. But...

the reason i am asking is with 2080, with the current setup, in 2-3 minutes, the result is almost the same as 2-3 hours. so it almost gives the same results with increased time...a weaker video card (2070) running a minute longer may just give the same results.

i understand that it is faster, but if you run them a couple minutes, the results seem to be same??? In that case, 2070 may just be enough with these settings. (2-3 minutes per move)

2x2070 will be cheaper in price than 2080Ti, will be equal in TDP and slightly stronger than 2080Ti in terms of nps.
So why buy 2080Ti? Simple answer, because it is the first card to appear. Irrational reason ofc.

As per this post, 2080ti is ~22% faster than 2080, while being ~50% (?) more expensive.

From my perspective, not worth it, 2080 is fine. But depends on how it will be used. (E.g. if you are going to leave one position to compute for hours, maybe 22% speedup is worth those $400).

Is Leela crashing or is it just that your gpu is overheating?

If it's the gpu, check your cooling and/or try limiting with something like
https://www.msi.com/page/afterburner

Leela Discord suggestion was to limit power to 90%. Is working quite well for my GTX 1070 running at 98% and staying fairly cool at about 75C.

But hours vs minutes: evaluation does not change after 2-3 minutes...
