Searching a game other than chess to vary

Post by Kempelen »

Hi
I have been playing chess 35 years, and I continue playing and styding, but I would like to find a simpler game to vary a little. Some requisites I search:

- 2 players or more type. No puzzle type.
- Easy to learn, and possibility to play fast games.
- Not a big board. Not need to learn a lot of characters or knowledged trees (like civilization)
- Less skilled than chess or go. Where you can learn a few strategies and than is fun for the game.
- Would prefer much more strategy than tactics.
- If possible with windows or android version to be able to play with others.
- Chess is perfect and symetrical type. Maybe something different where bluffs, risk, intuition and other characteristics are involved. So no Go, Reversi or similar please.

I have been toying with Yathzee (very very fun, some strategy and tactics, quick games, but much luck involved, although if you play for classification and not for single games is fine), stratego, and minimetro (android). All fun but would like to see what others in this forum enjoy with other than chess...

thanks a lot in advance.

I guess that tic-tac-toe (AKA naughts and crosses) is too simple. Maybe his big brother Connect-4? It can also be generalized to Connect-N.

Othello/Reversi?
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

You do NOT need to beat the best Fornite player of the World to make serious $$,$$$ Money, you can still make Money by beating lesser talented players around the World

Abalone could be a candidate. However with the original initial position, it's too easy to draw defensively, but one of the daisy positions can solve that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abalone_(board_game)

Or Backgammon of course, especially when using the doubling cube (bluff / intuition). Yeah, there are dice involved, but over a number of games, it's not luck. GNU Backgammon is so good at higher difficulty levels that people assume it is cheating with the dice, only to discover that it also magically wins if they roll the dice themselves and enter the results.

I liked Stratego quite a bit but I only ever played it against humans. Quite a lot of strategy, gambling with initial setup, and risks to take.

Pente is another that is simple but dynamic against other humans (tournament rule should be in force once you're beyond novice level).

The Russian Campaign (excellent game)
Wooden Ships and Iron Men (pretty good)
Squad Leader (tons of fun)
King Maker! (superb game for 4-8 players, you're never out of the game)

Or Angriff! on the garage floor with micro-scale models.

Those were the days.

If I knew of an assisted living facility that stocked all these old games I'd give up this life and move in tomorrow!
