Updates have been made to the Honey source, a SF derivative. that is near release. Updates include an expanded Elo range from 600 to 2900, and of course normal strength that is around 3500 or so. In addition, I added two adaptive play levels "A-Level: geared towards stronger players and a "B-Level" that is geared towards weaker players. The engine will automatically as adjust its play to your level of play. The "B-Level" will make make more dramatic changes to its play to keep in the game. The "A-Level" will be more subtle. Both levels will end the misery f you're losing by a certain score to end the game quickly. For the "A-Level", it will play normal once you're a rook down, the 'B-Level" will keep you in the game longer until you're a queen down.
You also combine the Elo and the adaptive play mode to make even weaker levels if you find either method still too hard by itself.
For those that can compile their other own, I also made a special Honey released based on Joe Ellis' Crystal , named Crystal-Honey. It has all the special play by Elo and adaptive play that Honey has (plus all the other Honey features including 4 opening books, keyboard shortcuts etc, personality play) combined with the special style of play by Crystal that Joe has come up with. This may or may not be updated in the future, not really sure. It was designed for play with the DGT/Pi board and Allan Cooper will soon have it out with his RPi engine releases

and of it does ok vs Stockfish at many different time controls - this was probably a 'luckier" run - the strength of play is not my focus ( although I do try to keep it within reason) , to state the obvious I'm more focus on user interaction either for analysis or to play against ... and none of this happens without the Stockfish team who I whole heartily support and give credit to. They are the ones that make it happen and they do it on their own free time pro bono and they do it well. They deserve all the credit. Also, a special thanks to Joe Ellis for sharing Crystal with us.MikeB wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2019 6:15 am Updates have been made to the Honey source, a SF derivative. that is near release. A few minor changes were made to the algorithms for the weaker levels and adaptive levels this AM based on feedback. Re: updates ...
I know keep mentioning Honey X5i and its semi town Crystal honey-X5i - but I didn't like the play by Elo - in some cases the range was too great - and I still a have few outliers, but not as many, nor as extreme:
Shallow Blue2.0 was used as a benchmark , its rating is 1712 on CCRL at 40/4. Im the rating above, I just used an offset in the above listing to keep the top end and the low end ratings about equal distance from the desire. It's very difficult to program an engine to play at a "certain" rating with keep the formulas relatively simple, but the reality is that the strength of engines do not increase at a steady rate as nps increases - why ? who knows, it is what it is. Anyway , I'm pretty satisfied with these results as the playing range is just over 1950 Elo ( 2927 less 974) and the user can increment the strength just about 1 Elo at a time ( more or less as the table above shows)
Phase two of this initiative was to introduce adaptive play - I did not have good success at introducing "one setting" for all levels of adaptive play, but with threee settings , "easy", "medium" and "hard" , I believe I had some success.
"Easy" adaptive play settings - it has about 300 Elo playable range from Elo 1000 to Elo 1300 (ymmv for all of the listed playing ranges, since the playing range for You depends upon on how often You want to win or lose).
"Medium" "adaptive play settings - it has about 600 Elo playable range from Elo 1300 to Elo 1900.
"Hard" "adaptive play settings - it has about 900 Elo playable range from Elo 1900 to Elo 2800.
I should be able to get exe's , with the help of Alan Cooper and Lucas Monge, in the next day or two.
Sorry for the delay, but I kept having a nagging feeling that I could better ..and I do believe this is better than what I had previously for sure...
If there is a demand, I suppose I could introduce 5 levels of adaptive play - let me know what you think once you had a chance to play with it.

Re: updates ...
final tweaking, anchored to Shallow Blue 2.0 on CCRL 40/4 @ 1712, it appears to me that CCRL is roughly 200 Elo stronger than USCF - so a 1712 CCRL rating is closer to 1900 USCF than to 1700 USCF - of course anybody with a different CPU will get different results than here - although there is an UCI option to approximate my system - from the start position , set hash to 16M , start analysis and note the nps - entered that nps under the UCI "Bench_KNPS" option ( doesn't have to be exact , nearest 100K is fine). The final tweaking was to address some outliers as well as two make the weaker levels truly weaker , so that one just learning the game of chess will have a shot at winning in a week or less depending on their native skill level ( most should be able to win at the 1000 leveling in less than week, if not the first day, I would think).
"Adaptive play" modes - auto adapts to your strength, based on the evaluation - although if one makes a gross blunder , your goose is cooked. The algorithms are the same for "Hard", "Medium" and "Easy" are the same , the only difference is the starting point ( Elo Strength starting point , "Hard" starts at a 2900 Elo setting , "Medium" starts at a 2400 Elo setting and "Easy" starts at a "1500" Elo setting.
The "Hard" setting hash a 900 Elo playing range , from 1900 to 2800:
The "Medium" setting hash a 600 Elo playing range , from 1300 to 1900:
The "Easy" setting has a 300 Elo playing range from 1000 to 1300
Code changes will soon be uploaded to Github and we'll start on making exe's and make available for download.
All of the code changes above will also be in Crystal-Honey X5i as well.

Re: updates ...
Something about Honey's name here... are you planning on calling it "something X5i"? Where does the X5i come from?
I think the previous incarnation was called Honey XPro and I liked that, and would hope for a clear version scheme, such as naming the next one "Honey 1.0" (XPro would then just be some Beta of the concept) or "Honey XPro 2.0" (the second release of the XPro series.)
But "Crystal Honey X5i" sounds just too convoluted, unless we'd also be getting the X5 (without the i), the Honey (without Crystal), X4, X3, and X2... the naming scheme for releases could be greatly simplified and avoid confusion (or questions like "where's the others?" with "the other one is just Honey XPro" as the answer.)
"Honey 2" or just "Crystal Honey" (first one on a new series) would work better.

I like convoluted .. it's taking over the scheme from McCain. The "i" is a trade secret. hahaOvyron wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2019 2:33 pm Something about Honey's name here... are you planning on calling it "something X5i"? Where does the X5i come from?
