I see you used to run 2x Intel Xeon E5-2687W. Are you still running this hardware or have you upgraded?

I assume you have upgraded as this system would now be considered quite slow.

Damn! First post I view this morning, and I discover my system is now "quite slow". :(

Code: Select all

stockfish bench 1024 20 24

===========================
Total time (ms) : 75150
Nodes searched  : 2507334514
Nodes/second    : 33364398
Oh well. Time and tide (and technology) wait for no man.

LOL! :D :D :D

Is that really the system you have?

I wouldn't have guessed.

Looks like anyone with a $500 cpu can best that mark. So, I suspect a lot of people will be upgrading to try to keep ahead of the curve!

So now you laugh at me and emphasize just how "sucky" my machine has become. Thanks a lot! :D

I can produce a bigger number with 40 threads, making use of Intel's hyperthreading. No idea if this actually translates into better chess.

Code: Select all

stockfish bench 1024 40 24

===========================
Total time (ms) : 68480
Nodes searched  : 2899687278
Nodes/second    : 42343564
And if I switch to Cfish, which makes better use of large pages and has NUMA-awareness that Stockfish lacks, I can squeeze out just a bit more:

Code: Select all

./cfish bench 1024 40 24

===========================
Total time (ms) : 50768
Nodes searched  : 2421445526
Nodes/second    : 47696295
But I think I'm out of optimizations at this point.

My ancient AMD does 47 million nps. (See Ipman's list)
I paid about 700 for it.
Of course the 4x1200 watt power supplies eventually make your system a bargain compared to mine.

like everything else technology related, cost goes down exponentially over time for the same compute power.

But it could be a lot worse as to money lost over time. If you buy an ASIC solution like Hydra or Deep Blue, it costs a bundle and then the cheap systems surpass it in 5 years,

So I guess the lesson is, you buy the hot hardware and you have the keen power to analyze.

But after a few years you must repeat the cycle or you fall behind.

Or you can use a giant pile of machines, even though not powerful.

My approach is a combination approach
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Yes, but that's with asmFish. :wink:

Code: Select all

./asmFishL_2017-05-22_bmi2 bench 1024 40 26

===========================
Total time (ms) : 140686
Nodes searched  : 8010498592
Nodes/second    : 56938846
I've forgotten how fast asmFish is. Too bad it is such a difficult project to maintain. Hope Ronald is able to maintain Cfish, but that one hasn't been updated in a while either.

Dann, I believe your right. You get a new cell every year because the new one is sooo much better than the old one. An 18-core 2697 v4 seemed sooo good 4 years ago and now it's mediocre. TCEC has used dual 2699 v4 for several years, which means they will have to upgrade soon. If you intend to win at online computer games, you need the best stuff.

I think AMD's bid for CPU supremacy has dramatically altered the cycle, for at least a cycle or two. The huge drop in the cost of compute power has made it possible for many CC players who would otherwise been at a huge disadvantage to close the compute gap. I'm not sure how long this will last but the difference between “top of the line” and “affordable” systems is much smaller than it used to be. e.g. $30,000 for 200+M nps vice $3000 for 100+M nps. This will make it virtually impossible for people with money to dominate the CC landscape. Not necessarily a bad thing if you ask me!

Re:Low end build

Post by Zenmastur »

I did a low cost all new build to see what the max spread of NPS and $ are.
All materials are found on Newegg:

1.) CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 1700X 8-Core 3.4 GHz (3.8 GHz Turbo) Socket AM4 95W YD170XBCAEWOF Desktop Processor $170
2.) MB: ASRock B450 PRO4 AM4 AMD Promontory B450 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard $89
3.) GPU: CORN NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 1GB 128-Bit DDR5 Graphic Card random color Video Card GPU GTX650-DCO-1GD5 DirectX 11 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP DVI/VGA/HDMI $50
4.) RAM: OLOy WarHawk RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin Intel/AMD Ready DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model MD4U083216BEDA $68
5.) HD/SSD: Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 3D2, QLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDPEKNW010T8X1 $95
6.) PS: APEX Apexgaming AI-400 400W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS Certified Non-Modular Active PFC Power Supply $30
7.) Cooler: Included In CPU price $0
8.) Case: DIYPC Solo-T2-R Black USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Gaming Computer Case with 2 x Red Fans (1x 120mm LED fan x front, 1x 120mm fan x rear) Pre-installed $24

Total build cost $526 plus shipping. It doesn't include a keyboard mouse or monitor. This system should be capable of 25M nps or there about. This is an upgraded able system. It's not the absolute cheapest system you could build. e.g. the 1 TB NVMe SSD should allow full 6-man syzygy plus select 7-man syzygy. It could also handle a Ryzen 9 3900X for another $330. With a little more money it could be made suitable for NN engines as well. For someone on a budget that wants a “decent” machine for chess this would work.

The addition of low end machines like this minimize the disparity from high end to low end systems.

And the bottom graphic here shows that the very expensive AMD 7742 smokes the AMD 7601 and utterly destroys the Intel 8280 in terms of nodes per dollar with SF and AF.
